Exclamation Some things re: site, hurricane

    Hi All,

First I really want to thank all of you that reached out to me to ask if I’m okay. That was really something that helps a great deal. Like many others in SW Florida, I have a difficult road ahead with house repairs but keeping it in perspective, many people fared worse from the hurricane, so I’m grateful. And that brings me to one of the other reasons I wanted to make this post…

My house is still without power or water, and cell service is extremely spotty and nonfunctional for data, so for the time being, I am extremely limited in any capacity to read and reply to messages and calls. I have been able to head down to my brother’s house in Estero (where I am at now) a few times to use his WiFi (and shower as well as do laundry lol) but with reports of houses being looted now I don’t want to leave open that possibility for my house, so I stay there mostly.. There’s a lot of photo gear there that I don’t want to risk losing.

If you need to contact me by all means try to call. I’ll return your calls and messages as soon as the situation allows, but please be patient. Calls can come through sometimes. I just don’t want to give the impression that I’m ignoring anybody.

I hope those of you in this hurricane’s path did not suffer any serious losses. It’s a complete warzone here. My thoughts are with you. And again, thank you all for always being there for me and the site. We’ll be back to business very soon .

    Greg

Is there anything some extra hands can do for you and your family, Greg? Or would we just be in the way?

That’s incredibly nice of you, thank you. I am very appreciative of that.

Right now I’m just waiting for the power and water to become functional so the house is livable, and slowly get things working again. Once those utilities are restored and the roof repaired, the rest I can take care of little at a time.

My roof sustained some damage in areas and that roof is original with the house (2003). When my insurance was up for renewal in May, Florida Peninsula would not cover it after they sent an inspector to look it over, and he felt the roof has less than five years of service life left. I had the roof inspected separately last month as we were entering hurricane season and I was told it was in surprisingly excellent condition, however because of its age and that it had been through three other hurricanes (without any damage) FP denied covering it. A lot of people in Florida unfortunately got dropped in recent years for similar reasons. Insurance companies annoy me and I guess you can tell that the situation with that aggravates me a great deal.

In the end I was fortunate compared to many others. The damage I quite literally see all around me is very heartbreaking. It could have been much worse for me. Many of you sent me messages of support and I just want to say that means a great deal to me. I live alone, which is fine for me, but in situations like this it really gets lonely.

I’m heading back up to the house in the morning to tarp the damaged areas of the roof and start to clean up. I won’t have any internet or cellular service so I’ll write back when I’m able to.

Thank you so much everybody. If anybody else here with a similar situation needs anything that I might be able to help with let me know. It will all work out

I appreciate it, thank you. I grew a little complacent with my roof. It survived hurricane Charlie (cat 5) and Irma without any damage at all.
My next mission is to find a reliable roofing company. As is always the case with bad storms, when they're over there are suddenly 300 roofing companies circling around in Cape Coral like hungry sharks. If anybody knows a reputable roofing company, please let me know.

Also, if anybody might want to support the site, it would help a ton with the required site-wide upgrades to the server and the site, especially now. I really hadn't counted om getting smacked dead-center with a cat 4 hurricane just as we were preparing the site database for the beginning of the site revamp.

In other news, I finally have electricity in the house now, but no internet access and Verizon cellular is still nonfunctional. I received a text from Verizon stating that they were giving everybody in the affected hurricane areas unlimited data for a month, which is nice if only their system worked.

Just go with a roofer that's been here, get at least 2 quotes if not 3.

get the stick-on under layer vs tar paper.

Do you have water leaking in?

If you can wait them out and if your roof is not leaking, that is what I would do. Let the sharks play themselves out.

Far as being alone. I feel ya. But I have a dog and 6 parrots inside, and 3 cats outside... at last count.

    Call me anytime.

...DO NOT go with a spanish-s tile, in any of its many forms, that ALL the roofers pushed on everyone in south florida in the 90's & 2000's down here. what's become popular these days finally, are the metal roofs, that last, and are completely wind resistant, unlike the air-scoops of the spanish-s shapes. optional insulating sheet foam can be installed under the metal roofs as well. the stickdown material is called modified bitumen. common nowadays as the underlayment under just about all roof types, cause its good stuff...

100% agree. We don't use anything but the peel/stick underlayment for shingle. Just a superior product over old school paper or even the new synthetics. Plus, with the updated code, you have to do 2 layers of the paper vs 1 layer of peel/stick. For the northerners it's the same as ice/water shield.

If you go metal or tile, it's still a peel/stick membrane but a slightly different product, as it has a woven mat backing.

We do a ton of re-roof up here in Central Florida, but have decided not to chase work down there. But, if you have any questions, I'd be happy to help.

Can tell you for retail re-roof up this way (shingle) it's in the $500 +/- per square range. That's a quality shingle with peel/stick.
