    A Sea of THOUSANDS of Ford trucks waiting for ... computer chips.

    In the past I have worked for several OEM (Original Equipment Manufactures).
    And one of my past positions was in supply chain. Having said that, I understand why Ford built so many semi-finished trucks.

    To keep the manufacturing plant running and the employees working. In doing this, Ford Motor Company is not receiving the full revenue receivables from sales. Therefore, taking current financial sell loses, and still meeting payroll and supply part expenditures.

    However, this is a wake-up alarm. Computer chips need to be made in America, especially the CPU (Central Processing Unit) chips.

    40,000 trucks X $50,000 each = $2,000,000,000.

    2 Billion Dollars (estimated) worth of inventory sitting in a makeshift parking lot ... not making any money.

    ...there are equally large amounts of units(cars/trucks) in hold lots, in southeast michigan, just south of detroit. its not uncommon over recent years to see this. even before the chip shortage that covid created, but didn't help with even larger numbers. over production, marketing changes, economy changes, other part shortages, poor forecasting, etc., have filled these vehicle pools, usually out of the way, out of site storage areas, for many years lately...

    GM is also hit by the Computer Bug (shortage of computer chips).
    ~~~~~
    "Right now, there are close to 100,000 GM vehicles waiting for the chips, and the company says that most of them were built last month [June]."
    Sitting out in the weather cooking in the sun like that, I would no longer call them new. I wonder if they will spray them with that "new car" in a can scent when they hit the lots.
    Vehicles that start, run and drive with no safety related "chips" missing are being sold with a customer contract stating the vehicle is missing options it would have been built with, and will be added at dealer level when available. Problem we're seeing as techs is this information isn't in the vehicle build sheet or service information. So if we get a complaint from a customer that maybe didn't understand (or wasn't completely informed about) an option it was built with but is inoperative, we are wasting time troubleshooting something that isn't there. More than once now we've resolved this with our sales department, but if a vehicle is sold and serviced at different dealerships, I can see it being an even bigger time issue for the tech. Fun times.
