What is the optimum length for a rifle barrel?

Ryan McLean, the Product Testing Manager at MDT, shot Federal Gold Medal Match through the rifle's 6-foot-long barrel while taking velocity measurements. Every few shots, McLean lopped off an inch of the barrel with a band saw and took another measurement—and the results were surprising.

For the next 20 inches that McLean cut off, there was little change in velocity. Then, around the 42-inch mark, things started to drop off. After around 30 inches, every inch taken off of the barrel resulted in a loss of 15 fps, leaving the muzzle velocity at 2567fps at 19 inches.

Interesting read, but I think it would depend on the caliber, bullet weight, charge, etc. Every caliber could be different. His .308 could have different results with different ammo.

Yep, each caliber, bullet weight, powder burn rate and amount used will make a difference.

So many variables. I have a 220 Swift Rem 700 VSII. The more powder, the tighter the groups became. Using formed fitted cases at 3 grains over max, it was shooting dime size groups at 200 yds last time out.

I am sure there is an optimum length. But it depends on load, caliber, etc. All that really needs to be done is most of the powder burn creating the most pressure. Shorter barrels some of it will escape.

I need to buy some Norma brass. And start over. I just bought a 700 Sendero in 270 that I will dial in once I rescope. These heavy barrel guns are awesome, but a pain to carry around.

I saw him cut it, but no chamfer or relief either. Not sure how much that helps, but all of my newer and most older guns have a chamfer at least.

I have tools to cut & lap the crown for accuracy... but I don't think it has any effect on muzzle velocity.

Let's just go ahead and make America great again!
