    2.5L Crankshafts

    Found one, thx

What's everybody doing for crankshaft journal repairs ? Good cranks are getting hard to find these days for a reasonable price so are there options for journal repairs that some of you may have used that you'd care to share as I've got one that needs a journal repair.

    Thanks

Find a good used crank,it will be better than a repaired one,and be less expensive than shipping and repair...I will not use a repaired crank.

    Hey Chris,

Long time no talk, hope your doing great. I've been searching for a good used crank but pick'ns are slim at least for a reasonable priced one . I'm with you on repaired cranks, it would be a last resort.

    Thanks,
    Gary

Shoelace and emory cloth, for my personal consuption, with nothing to lose.

If you got something to lose, or your damage is more than .001, listen to Chris.

Damage is well beyond a .001 flaw. Found a crank in excellent shape yesterday so I'm good to go.

Been there,Done that...long ago when the inline sixes were the standard work motor down here i made my living rebuilding them, and I did find a rod needle around .0015 larger in diameter(don't remember exactly)that would allow a couple thou polish off the crank, and 001 out of the rod...Worked fine, had to keep notes.
Problem is the crank journels are a little like M&M's,hard shell over soft inside. The rockwell 61-62 is only 5-7 thousandths thick,so there is precious little to polish before getting too thin to hold up.Grinding like automotive cranks is not an option,Chris

When i was on a crank hunt i did find a company out in cali that would only work one journal on a merc crank. They said any more than one is too sketchy. But from what i understood, they spray weld to build up and then grind down to size so the shell is still hard. May be an option in the future if you run into one that only needs one journal repaired.
