2001 Mercury 280 CON Fresh Rebuild by Dave Driefort

I live in a county where I run 20 miles in a 25 - 30 mph speed zone before I get to water (Lake George) where I can run fast. And then the lake may be rough if it's windy because it's a pretty big body of water. So consequently my boats rack up most of the hours below 3500 rpm. A race built 280 isn't the ideal motor for my application.

This motor has never been in salt water. It's currently being rebuilt by Dave Driefort. It went to US Chrome for fresh plating. I sent him a new set of Wizard pistons on his recommendation. I asked Dave to build the motor right.

I live close to him so he offered to put the power head back on my boat and go do the break-in with me in the freshwater canals that run west from Vero. Good for him knowing it's done right and good for me for the same reason. I appreciate that he will do this. It has an equally clean Sportmaster lower and an offshore single ram mid. The cowling is very clean.

Please note that my motor has an offshore mid with the pump in the boat. I'd prefer a trade deal where this can stay but it's not a deal breaker.

I'm willing to sell outright -OR- I'm willing to take a full or partial trade for something (Merc 2.5) more suitable to my use. A ProMax 225 for example but I'm open to talk and suggestions.

I have a 1999 Mercury 225 Promax that was just traded in with 6 hours on a fresh rebuild that I would be interested in working something out with you on if your deal falls through. It is stock other than a gold brucato slide intake. 20 inch bass mid, alien cowling, coned lower.

I do not have the motor back from the builder yet. I'm talking to a couple of people. Trying to decide what will be best for me.

Thanks for all the contacts. I'm not interested in trading my power head for a used one. I've decided to wait until the 280 is built and sell it outright.

The motor is home and ready to sell. Based on guidance from the builder I'm pricing it at $11,500. It's hard to find them this clean anymore. I don't need the money and I won't mind if it doesn't sell. But if I can get $11,500 I'll let it go.

Everything is new except the crank and rods. New nic, Wizard pistons, bearings, reeds, all new. I gave Dave the OK to replace anything that it needed and he was comfortable with the crank and rods after the disassembly.
