Yes, solar power is the answer ...

Every home needs the whole roof covered in panels.

The mid-westerners that live in the eastern half of the country should plow under their corn .. and plant solar panel fields.
No corn means no cattle or hogs to pass flatulence. We will all become skinny vegans.
California should do the same with the Vinyards.
Idaho's potato crop should be solar panel farms as well.
And of course, we in Florida will do away with watermelons, avocados, snap beans, tomato's and those nasty oranges with pulp and ... like Oh my god ... seeds.
We would have so much solar power at our disposal .. we could all drive golf carts for free ... But of course, with all the suns rays being consumed by solar panels, instead of warming the earth, growing the forests (which BTW live on CO2) burning off harmful deposits in the air and water .... WE WOULD BE IN STORE FOR SOME REAL CLIMATE CHANGE ....

The innovative flow battery employs a non-flammable electrolyte that transfers chemical energy to electricity in order to store energy for later use while achieving utilities’ environmental, lifespan, and safety goals.
Honeywell’s innovative technology can store and discharge power for up to 12 hours, outlasting lithium-ion batteries, which can only discharge for 4 hours. The battery is made of recyclable materials and will not deteriorate over time. It preserves system performance, ensuring a dependable and cost-effective system for the next 20 years.

Duke Energy will put the flow battery technology to the test at its and Innovation Center in Mount Holly, North Carolina. This company is implementing an aggressive clean energy plan, with targets of reducing]carbon emissions half compared to 2005 by 2030 and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

If the battery is deployed at scale, it will Duke Energy’s reliance on-fuel power plants by harnessing solar and wind.

These renewable energy sources are becoming increasingly cost competitive with traditional fossil fuels, accounting for more than 70% of new power output. Honeywell intends to launch a utility-scale prototype project of 60 megawatt-hours in 2023.

Cudes… Don’t take your eye off the ball. This thread is about electric boats. One in particular, (with many hidden secrets). It’s right there in the title. And the elephant in the room is the energy storage medium. Electric motors are simple, light efficient, and very well developed over their 200 year history. The problem isn’t with motors. It’s with batteries. Still if you want to talk about other things like ion thrusters, and not storage batteries for electric boats or similar transportation challenges, that’s fine. I love that stuff. Just don’t accuse me of being the one that is picking and choosing what we talk about.

Some problems are really tough… while batteries like electric motors are also 200 years old, electric motors are very well developed and fully up to whatever we need from them. It’s the batteries that are the stumbling block, always been, And look like they will be for quite some time, considering the best batteries we’ve got are still 57 times less than gasoline, by weight. That is a huge gap for an already mature, 32 year old technology to make up.

The Vision Hellkat guys talk of wanting to hit 140mph. It won’t be a problem of accessing horsepower. There are plenty of electric motors out there that can deliver the power they need. Adapting them to outboard will take some work, but it doesn’t require scientific breakthroughs like batteries do. The problem they face is batteries. They need one big enough to not catch fire at high discharge rates, but light enough not to cause problems for the boat. Believe it or not, I think it can be done. The math checks out. Roughly. But it will be a challenge. I suspect they will need a lot of hyper-expensive, custom equipment.

Some info there, thanks. I wish they said why they throttled back. I’ve got to think it has to do with respecting an over-discharge rate. Discharge too fast, and boom, white hot-lithium fire.

They said they would like to reach an outboard world speed record this year (was it 140mph?) That should actually be doable, presuming they address the issues with high discharge rates. Heavier batteries, are one way to do it, but tben that calls for more power. But Nothing about that claim isn’t doable from the technical standpoint. They may be able to strike a balance where they pull it off, but the battery is too damaged to use again… Like Maverick in the second Top Gun, where he pulled off the profile, but totaled the jet (due to over stress), in the process.

But they also talked about (correct me if I’m wrong) reaching a BEV range record of 138 miles. That’s where they were a little slick and dodgy. This will not happen with their Hellkat, or any planing hull boat. Not with lithium ion in 2023. We can run through the math if anyone is interested. Just let me know. Now… Vision Marine does make and sell 5-7mph displacement hull boats. Pile them up with batteries, get a USCG experimental waiver on flotation safety rules. In that case, it might be possible. The fact that they didn’t make the distinction that it won’t be possible at planing speeds is what is dodgy and misleading. IMHO.

I must also add that they were slick and polished marketers. Their answers to questions about range were very slick, tech-free deflections. Like the one about how the Wright Brothers only flew for six seconds.

Only lost 14% charge in 3/4 of a mile? That sounds like a lot, and it is, if you want to spend the day on the lake. But it actually more or less pencils out mathematically, given the claimed power and 75Wh installed capacity, which is what Vision sells in it’s package on it’s web site.

See Cudes? I’m not what you think I am. I’m just a numbers guy. Numbers and physics don’t lie. (My degree is in Mechanical Engineering). This is why I keep asking for numbers. Numbers are things we can work with and use to separate the possible from the impossible, the believable from the not-so-believable.

    Does that make sense?

It sounds like you might know personally some of the key players on the Hellkat team. If so, it would be a lot smoother if you were the one to ask him for key technical details, rather than if I call him up as a stranger, with my Australian accent and asked him for technical details that might be company secrets.

Let's not forget those wind turbines that are all over the mid-west. I can't believe that any of us even have a power bill with all of this government electricity being generated for "FREE". Has anyone been offered a "FREE" hook-up for their car, boat or motorcycle? The government is going to push all that are willing into one corner and then have total control with electric generation and sales. This whole trust your government and leaders sounds like a great plan, just ask an Indian.

SCREW the power bill, not sure it's true but i've read where 7 KW or 7,000 watts is enough for a house

this unit 13,000 watt or 13kw for $20,000 so you can charge your car and boat

My retirement home which is comming soon will have solar for sure.

I can see dozens from my house and hundreds within a few miles of here... there are always 20% not turning, no matter how windy it is; so we're down under 80% of whatever the claimed output is right off the line.

Let's just go ahead and make America great again!

I was going to cover that in the next chapter. Ancient Aliens , pellors, jets, anti-gravity and battery powered rock saws ...

    D,
I tried to warn them .. that they needed to drain the wan-ton soup out of the bearings and load em up with 30wt wally world oil. The nerd in the white lab coat fell over with a massive coronary attack .. just thinking about needing to use a petroleum product ...

Nothing to be alarmed about ... that there is clean energy smoke you're look at ..

    Skreemin,
Shaun is a paid employee. You don't think he is going to say anything that even resembles anything negative, do you .. ???
And if he really thought that electric was the way to go ... he would have put his MTI up for sale ... the day he got home ..

Well I tell ya .. the hole crew come down wiff that Rona virus , but they worked hard on this here Rona/Viagra # 18 Chevrolet, cuz they knowed we was up aginst some ... stiff competition this weekend ...
Please find me a new sponsor fer next year ....

If it was just about a couple of guys who took a boat with a couple of 300x motors and replaced the powerheads with electric motors .. everyone would say, good job guys .. nice novelty ... and the thread would have died by the second page.

Sadly it's way more than that. There is a whole group of people out there who have a warped sense of reality who have no idea what people who work pay check to pay check go thru on a daily basis.

They use terms like : ozone layer, global warming, climate change, and the worst one yet ... renewable energy. Not one of them say how that are going to get energy back .. that's already been used ..

They are willing to crash our society over some utopian dream they have. So as long as they and their sheeple followers who put the cart in front of the horse and speak about "how great it's going to be" so we should "stop selling gas now" ..
Then there will always be levelheaded realist's around to try and bring them down off the ledge ...

I couldn't wait on the sidelines any longer.

Green energy is a sham and always has been.

One more example of the many.

Thanks for the explanation. By renewable, they mean that you can wait till the right time of year, till the land, plant your seed, fertilize it, water it, run off the people who want to steal "only a little", shoot the crows and wild boar that want to show up every day to eat it. Hope a storm doesn't wipe out your crop. Pick the corn, sell it for whatever they want to give the farmer for it, so they can turn it into moonshine, mix it with gasoline and sell that to a public that doesn't like the maintenace that comes along with it.

Sure seems a lot easier to just pump oil out of the ground ...

You love to pick and choose your conspiracy theories.
Fact check: Electric automobiles catch fire less frequently than gasoline-powered cars, but the duration and intensity of the fires can make them considerably more difficult to put out due to the use of lithium-ion battery packs.

Bradley, I don't work for the daily mail. So I didn't write the article. if you don't like what they wrote, I suggest that you contact them and whine in their ear.

Even your over sensitive woke azz has to admit that 6000 gallons of water is quite a bit over the top to cool a battery fire enough to finally extinguish it ..

In simple numbers .. johhny-come- lately golf carts are less than 1% of the cars on the road .. wouldn't it make sense that over the last 100 or so years that there have been more gas fires than battery fires ...

Chaz = thinkin, didn't i see you on the news, dancing in the street with lori lightfoot celebrating 2 out of 3 store front's in chitcargo .. empty. And car jackings up 165%
    You should be proud ..
