150 optimax issues
Just picked up a 2010 150 optimax that had bad fuel ran through it and wouldn't run. Switched to an external tank for testing and bled the bad fuel out of the fuel rails. Fired right up and ran good. Then we changed the fuel filter, plugs, impeller, thermostats, drained VST out of the flat head plug on the front and replaced fuel filter water sensor. It runs good on the hose idles fine and revs up high but then when we put it in the water it stalls out. We took it back home and bled the fuel out of the rails again and there was more water in it. The engine only stops running when we put it in gear in the water, it idles all day just sitting at the dock. Could it be sucking up water somewhere? Is it holding more water somewhere? Bits of water spray out of the air rail Schrader valve when it is depressed not sure if this is a diaphragm issue or something. We tested fuel and air pressure and they are 80 and 90 psi respectively.
(first time opti owner only ever had real 2 smokers before.)

Try disconnecting the shift sensor on the slide mechanism. It COULD be the problem it’s a little button looking thing. Cleaning and inspecting the diaphragms is a PIA but with bad fuel esp water might have be worthwhile.

Where is the shift sensor and where is the diaphragm?
just learned now that the person who owned it put in e85 and then it sat for 6 Mo.

The shift interrupt sensor is on the throttle where the shift cable rides blue and black wires The rubbers are on the fuel rail port side has fuel and air star side has the tracker valve which is a way to balance the fuel and air pressures. Find a parts diagram like on boats dot net. Then find your serial number and look it up. It will show all the parts and their location. Price too, which will be outrageous.

The fuel and air pressures are 80 and 90

So am I reading this right?
- You had bad fuel in the tank, drained everything (VST, rails etc), hooked up a protable tank.
- Now with the portable tank still installed, you have water in your fuel side of the rail
- You also have water in the air side of the rail

We just opened up vst and cleaned it and it was absolutely gummed up to where it had no fuel pressure. We are about to test it under load.

Just took it out and it fires up and idles perfect. Backs off the trailer and idled to the speed zone. The second I pushed the throttle it surged and cut out. This is after vst cleaning, new filter, etc. it idles all day feels like a fuel restriction. It could be pulse pump gummed up. I don’t think it’s injectors because it wouldn’t idle. Any ideas?

TPS maybe? (Throttle position sensor). They do strange stuff when they go bad.

I was thinking pulse pump should probably rebuild it.

So I rebuilt the fuel pump and now it runs a lot better in the water but dies above 1500-2000rpm. I’m stumped any ideas? Could it be the injectors can’t push enough under load?

sorry didn't see that earlier. Yes the lady ran e85 through the engine and let it sit for a couple months and there was water in the tank and stuff.
with the portable we had water in it but now don't anymore because we cleaned out the vst.
in the air side of the rail when we push in the valve just a squirt comes out so I don't think its "water" but more like condensation. Or should that be completely dry?

Air side should be completely dry. It will mist a little bit but if you put the fuel pressure dump hose into a jar while running you shouldn't have any liquid in there. If it is water, it could be coming from the compressor head gasket. If fuel, there are multiple spots, tracker, fuel pressure diaphragm, injector o-ring, stuck injector. Who knows what that e85 did to this poor thing.
If its just a tiny bit at start up after sitting for a while, it could be an injector leaking down when off.

On my air and fuel pressure readers I don’t have the fuel dump lines. When I press the air valve after running it’s just a small mist it’s not like it is pouring out. What do you think the plan of attack should be?
