Known good stock lower unit guy (common Yamaha 40)
Stock motor for recreational/fishing use (13foot Whaler)
I want ship my small Yammie 40 lower to someone who knows how to set these things up right.
Ok… I don’t trust my local gearbox guy ATM. He “doesn’t work on outboards”, but he does outdrive I/O lowers all the time. I had him pressure test and re-seal this one for me and now it clicks while in neutral (barely touching forward) and doesn’t grab at all I’m reverse unless you rev it then it bangs into reverse and still doesn’t stay there. He has great reputation but …
My small Yamaha (40hp) reverse and neutral are AFU. In the neutral position of the shift pivot/lever in the cowl pan, it’s ever so slightly “forward” by way of clicking when you turn the prop or run the motor in neutral at idle: sounds like a playing card clipped to your bicycle spokes as a kid. Move the pivot lever to reverse and it never quite grabs unless you rev the motor then it grabs reverse with a bang, (something you don’t want to do too much).
So I’m thinking either something is not set up right, or something is broken in the gearbox. Works great in forward gear.
I want to send this thing out to someone who knows how to set these things up …
Suggestions?

Any chance you installed it wrong or that you just need to adjust your linkage or cables?

Thanks guys. This is the approach I’m working now… Seeing if I can adjust the problem away.

So this morning, I (in order):
1) disconnected the shift cable so I could pivot the shift lever by hand, into the forward, neutral and reverse detents
1a) found that forward detent was forward gearbox, neutral detent was forward gearbox, reverse detent was neutral gearbox
2) pulled the lower unit, pulled the shift shaft (wedge style), farted around with it, then shoved it back in, (bit of hit and miss because the box was full of the drive oil so you couldn't see specifically where it goes.)
2a) this time, everything is as it should be and I could reset the cable ends to where they should normally be :shrugs:
The only thing I can think is maybe the shop that sealed and pressure tested it for me put the shift shaft wedge facing 180 degrees out of clock... or not all the way seated... or something. I've never fiddled with this small Yammie gearbox before. Anyway, it all worked like it should, out on the lake today.

What still remains unsolved is, who is a reputable lower unit repair/rebuild place in case the time every comes where I need it?

Congratulations! It sure is nice when occasionally in life it’s something small and simple and stupid that we can fix that doesn’t cost us any money! Glad to hear you got it up and going. By the way, how many damn boats and motors do you have? Lol

So as not to crap up this thread, I posted an answer in the photos section.
Thanks as always for the help and kind words, mate.

up to you but Id try to find someone locally. Shoudn't have to send a 40hp gearcase across the country to get setup right. That or grab a manual and learn to do it yourself, its not that bad!

I ended up getting it sorted on my own. Pulled and re-installed the shift shaft and all of a sudden it was all right again.
I have the factory manual, so I might see what I can do without the “special tools” they keep referring to if the time ever comes that I need to. But all is good for now.
