New here putting my boat back together. Old School, help ID old I6
Ive browsed the forums over the years but finally was able to join and post. I have a 1959 Shell Lake 16 footer that Im going to be restoring and taking up to TN. I used to run the boat daily when I was living on the hook using it as my tender but times changed and the last hurricane flooded everything. The hull didn't take any damage but the engine unfortunately was toast so it has been sitting ever since. I have always loved the old merc inline sixes so that was what I have been keeping my eyes open for, not really particular of the year or hp. Last week I found/scored? an old engine that is "supposed" to have a rebuilt powerhead but have some sort of ignition problem. I've been researching and trying to find out what I can, the cowling has had all the paint removed and there are no markings. The number on the bracket is 4748959 and the motor 4868893.
The bottom is flat with molded strakes? so Ive been thinking about motor height and prop naturally.

I found some info on J blocks but it's new to me. The mid is a 20" and there is no low water pickup so maybe someone just stamped it or its something someone put together?? My goal is to redo it in white, add the chrome and the 800 face plate I have. Sort of turn it into a rodded '59. People can look at it and go "dang 80 hp on a 16 footer, I bet that screams" and I can smile knowing its not an 80 . . .
