    High Prices for Old Motors?

What seems to be the going rates for 90s 2.5 150 175 and 200s? I've been seeing them here and there.. but 4k for a 200 powerhead only seems steep. Seen even 2k asking for ones that are blown up and need rebuilt.. sign of the times or am I just cheap? lol

Pandemic pricing. The market for used anything, cars, boats, motors has simply become bizarre. They're are some reasonable offerings out there, but really tough to find.

thanks for the reply. I thought it was just me. I have a gut feeling that the prices on these things will remain high now that some folks have gotten the high numbers. I guess someone is buying this stuff tho.. deeper pockets than me I suppose

We seem to be going in an endless circle. With current supply techniques (just in time, with no reserve inventory), I just don't see us ever catching up. The production capacity just isn't there. In the mean time used stuff continues to age and become more worn out, but prices go up due to demand and lack of inventory. Not sure if there will ever be a "normal" again.

There is really nothing offered today with the kind of power to weight ratio that the old 2.5's offered. Then look at what a new engine costs. They don't make the 2.5's any longer but there are still lots of boats around that are really designed around the power to weight ratio offered by the 2.5's. I think the price will keep going up as long as repair parts are available and guys keep working on them. I have a nice low hour 225 promax that ate one cylinder that I can't decide what to do with. No idea how to price it with a blown cylinder. Its worth crazy money fixed.. I guess I need to fix it.

Any advice on a decent price for one of these 200s vs the "gotta have it" price? I am thinking much over 3k-3.5k is pushing it

They will only increase in value as time passes. Try to buy a nice two stroke lawn boy today and see what you pay. The new 4 strokes are nice but once outta warranty and the "right to repair" becomes a issue more common people will miss the simplicity of the 2 stroke outboard.
I recall when Merc stopped 2 stroke production someone maybe on this site but maybe another made a comment that the 2 strokes would plummet in value like 1200.00 for a 200XS.....I am still waiting and hoping

Early to mid 90's 2.5 200 should be 2500 for average condition and 3500 for nearly pristine. A 150 or 175 is worth MUCH less. The lower horsepower ones are far less desirable.

-Been seeing the same thing... In the 2.0/2.4 class, the 2.4/200's are much more expensive and rare. You can still get a 2.0/150 every now an then.

-In inflationary times caused by bad policy, people will spend while they can while their money still has value. What happens afterward depends on whether the same leadership pushing inflationary policy remains in power. I got into boating during the Obama economic slowdown. Bought my first boat in 2009 and several more following for unbelievably cheap. People couldn't get rid of them fast enough.

-I wonder if these types of motors are entering an era of vintage collector'ism? (Made up word) Where they are no longer sought after for day to day/recreational/fishing power for boaters on a budget, but are now being sought by people with money, not interested in day to day use, budget power?

Parts prices are also on the rise. In my 2020 catalog a cdm was my cost $56 and one bought last week showed up with a sticker of $69 my cost. Don't seem like a lot but that is almost 20%. There will also most likely be many parts we use today NLA. Cost of the new ones is retarded but won't be long before fixin an old 2.5 2 stroke will make buying the new ones sensible.

All I see is that good stuff holds its value and can appreciate - Mercury made some great stuff - and continues to -
Power has always been pricey and sought after .

This will kill off those of us with 80's era boats that can't float a 550lb motor, even those of us that can afford them. And ... There aren't many current-era boats that I know of in the 15-17 foot class that aren't utility hulls. Small, fast boats are going the way of the manual transmission.

If that is where the the prices should be then where are all the motors at those prices? As long as new motors cost an arm and a leg the old stuff will hold its value and possibly go up.

Ive been buying/building stuff all my life. Theres an inverse curve to pricing on everything that is or was ever “the thing” to have. Buying in at the bottom is impossible to envision but sometimes we get lucky. Like the rust free original paint mustang Lx notch/ac/pw/tilt/etc i boight with a blown head gasket for 400 bucks ten tears back. Sold that thing at such a high price a few years ago and almost felt guilty, until the guy who bought it literally started doing back flips in my driveway with excitement once the deal was done. One mans junk, another mans treasure i guess. As always the market demand/supply sets the value. Promax is currently over priced imo
