    OMC's Wonderful plastic carburetors

Well I still havnt gotten my 1986 Sport 220 Baja with its 3.6 litre Johnson V8. in the lake, every time I turn around theres a new problem, I can see why OMC went belly up. This motor has 8 plastic carbs, I had a couple that were leaking so I pulled them all apart, 5 of the 8 carbs have the imulsion tubes rotted off, cant imagine that they would make those out of plastic !! Brass would have been my choice, I am sure this is a result of running ethynol in it, looks like a couple of the carbs have been replaced, they all have plastic tubes, and most just crumble in your fingers. Any body know of any one who makes a repair kit for these ?? Lots of used omc carbs out there but they probably all have the same problems. If any one has any info. on these or repair secrets, I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

    They suck
    They crack
I buy sets of used carbs and if I need 2 I order 6...you can find them cheap. Like you said some of them will be bad but some will be good.

Thanks for the info, I am usually a Merc. guy, they used some plastic on some of the last inlines, but all the tubes and jets were brass. I see no reason why you couldnt find some brass tubing and drill it and do a press fit into the plastic housing ??

Use to be able to get new tubes from OMC and while still plastic they were much better and lasted even with ethanol fuel. Might try Dave at Sea Way to see if they have any.

Thanks, I am in the process of making a new set out of 1/4" round brass, this is what they should have been made out of in the first place. another reason OMC is history.

    Nice upgrade.

I am actually a fan of the carbs and have had great luck w/them and am running them on the twin 225’s on my 25’ Checkmate.

Still have a bit of idle tuning to do but they are close.

You can’t work on them like they’re aluminum but beyond that, I’ve had %100 success and I’ve run them in multiple 8K+ hot rod motors.

I was in a local fab shop that was making CNC float bowls for a customer having troubles w/them.
They thought it was funny after I told them of my success w/them.
I hope/expect your mods to be successful.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.
