In my old age I'm learning to say ... Nope, it's too far gone.
But-but-but,l they want $4000.00 for a new head.
It wouldn't be so bad if was a thicker casting, the exhaust log was removable so I could at least see where it's rotted thru at. Then I hold up a 20F (flex) torch and say this is the sewing machine I have to use ...
Even some of the old stuff is kind of tough ....

Been in the keys a couple decades and my $.02 for what it's worth . . .
Yamaha costs money whether it is in initial cost or parts. Finding a mechanic for a Tohatsu vs a Yamaha is much harder. The keys have had a massive influx of money, when you have 4, 5, or even 6 outboards money isn't something you are necessarily thinking about. What is desired is status and the ability to pick up a phone and get service so yamaha is the answer. When you are running a boat every day you know the hours will add up so you find the best deal you can with the best warranty, after 5 years you know you are looking at a new motor but you have managed to find relatively trouble free running for those 5 years. Money is very relevant so you will see other cheaper brands, besides IF you are local odds are you know someone who is a mechanic. As far as others go often it's a matter of what the boat had on it previously and the cost to change it over.

I hear a lot here on S&F about avoiding salt water motors.
Since we’re talking about salt water motors in the Keys, what drives the decision to replace? Salt corrosion damage or long term wear like worn bores and bearing surfaces? Does anybody even try keep up with corrosion or just close your eyes and just replace the whole motor when corrosion issues become too great? Seems like you could do little preventative maintenance things like opening up the exhaust chest and re lubing the screws every so often so they don’t corrode into place and snap off when you need to do real repairs.
Also, is Yamaha some kind of status symbol brand?

-Yes
In regards to replacing motors that is typically done compared to a used car, some will drive and repair till the doors fall off where others swap out every few years always having something new. Commercial guys usually swap out just before the warranty expires when they can still sell it as a newer model motor and help reduce the cost of a newer model.
