    Hydrostream Venom Top Speed

    Hey Guys,

First time post for me. I own a 2005 Hydrostream Venom with a 2005 Mercury Racing 2.5XS Optimax. I currently have a 28 pitch lab prop that came with the boat. I have had it going 85-90mph, do you think the pitch is right or I should change that, would like to break a 100. The motor was a one year motor from Merc racing, 2.5L V6 Optimax powerhead mounted on a 20 inch, 3.0 litre center section and gear case.

Any info or tips would be appreciated!

    Thanks
    Greg

Welcome aboard! I have been waiting for a thread like this, im very curious about the venom potential and to that end I would say you have plenty to gain yet. First lets hear more about your set up; jackplate? Set back? Low water pick up? Post some pics of this beast

Thats an awesome hull Greg congrats. Im guessing you have a water pressure gauge? If not you need one and If so your going to want to get the center line of the prop shaft an inch to two inches perfectly parallel above the pad while watching wp. Your prop can use some help, id skip right to the big gun and source a 32p lightning et. I have spoken with a guy who owned a venom who said it ran fastest with a cleaver but this guy was a bit looney so i am hesitant to even mention that.

That’s awesome thank you! Yes I have a water pressure guage! How much faster would running a 32 vs a 28 be? If propping is all I need I’ll go snap one up asap!

Had one here that ran about 102 with a 300x. Never liked the boat with a heavy motor. For me, the best engine to run over 100 would be a 15" 280.

About 15 years ago there was a guy in the midwest that supposedly ran upper teens.

It would have come with a Sportmaster from the factory. I am an Allison guy, but I liked the Venom. Pretty much the speed of an SS2000 and the interior room of a Grandsport. I don't know if you can hit 100 but mid 90s should be possible.

How much trim do you use now? What rpm at top speed? The usual props to try: 30-32 Mercury or Mazco cleaver, ET, Hoss Triton. Since I am a cheapskate, if I were spending your money, I would try some used props to get a feel for what works. You can buy and sell used props without losing a lot of money. Or you can accumulate them like I do.

Welcome to scream and fly! There are definitely a lot of guys here who can help you with your set up. Since you said that this boat is new to you, please please be extra careful as you are learning to drive it. Also please invest in a high-quality, expensive life jacket And wear it religiously. Those kind of speeds are not forgiving.

I’ve owned the boat for 14 years, when running wide open I can get the trim on the boat just below the halfway point on the guage. The engine top rpm 6800 soft, 7100 hare. Hard to remember but I believe wide open it was 6500+
