    what and where

2005 75 horse 4 stroke Yamaha probably first service. Steel collar 1" long outside diameter1.1/8" inside diameter just over 3/4". Came out when pulling lower unit. Was on driveshaft and looks to be brass. Looked up into mid and it looks as if it may sit above circlip but i am not sure. So question is what does it do and exactly where does it go and more importantly is it critical, Thanks.

Is it #23 & #24... "driveshaft bushing" in the bottom of the mid?

I assumed it was a stabilizing bushing as there is an area on the driveshaft that was shiny but I wasn't sure. It was fused to the driveshaft and removal of the lower was nearly impossible. I think the corrosion that is everywhere on this thing was what was holding it in place. You can see the circlip is distorted after forcing the bushing past it. Appreciate the reply David.

Quiet a bit online about those bushings "squealing" like an old alternator belt... bushing is supposed to be cleaned out and greased occasionally with some "special" yama-grease.
