3 liter water pump problem
so a few times its happened now, on my 225 pro xs, the rubber gasket that sits on top of the water pump housing rides up the shaft and causes my water pressure to drop. so my question is, is that seal supposed to hold pressure or is it there to create a vacuum? and a follow up question, is anything supposed to go on the shaft to hold it in place? like an adhesive?

I believe that rubber seal is supposed to go into the pump on a 3.0. On the 2.5 it just sits there and is designed to keep water on the plastic housing so it don't melt. On a 3.0 the housing is steel so a slinger is not needed. I think the 3.0 seal has a lip that goes inside the housing and the most of the seal sits on top.

The rubber slinger is primary intended to keep sediment out. Does little for pressure. High speed boats often push them up. If you have a pressure issue it is most likely not related to that slinger.
A common issue with 3.0 liter cases is the bridge in the housing separating exhaust from intake water corrodes and allows exhaust into cooling passage. Often an impeller gets changed without changing the plate and gasket. I often paint that bridge on saltwater engines to help extend its life. Early and maybe still after market impeller kits include a paper plate lower gasket. Merc changed that gasket under the plate to metal or hard composite material years ago.
Pump kits include a plastic locating tool to place slinger compressed on top of housing.Jim

Get a 450R rebuild kit. Works better for addtl. water pressure and seals better with rubber covering the perimeter of the plate. Its just a "better mouse trap deal".

so might as well keep updating lol, o ring was not the culprit, found some corrosion under the impeller housing on the wall that seperates the water side with the exhaust side. Im going to attempt a jbweld repair which im thinking should hold considering i clean it all up very good and scuff up the surface.
