2 Stroke V6 Advertising/Commercials
So I'm aware of the Black Max ads in the mid 70s to early 80s, but it seems like there's a huge absence of commercials/ads for outboards in the 80s and 90s. Why is that? The 50s, 60s, and 70s, had a ton of promotional content, but was there just nothing made from the 80s/90s? What gives? I can't find much other than catalog images from Mercury Racings, which, while cool, are not the same as all the commercials from the previous 3 decades.

I think they were still doing commercials... but very targeted (fishing shows, outdoor shows, ski tournaments) markets?

My theory is the fishing/bass boat market soaked up most of the consumer marketing dollars. Boat racing and high performance boating never seemed to catch the right marketing campaigns to leave memorable impressions which is a very challenging task in all fairness.
looking back it would have done the performance boat scene wonders to have more celebrity involvement. Imagine in 1985 a 30 second spot and billboard campaign with arnold schwarzenegger running his hotrod race type boat etc etc etc
that multi million dollar campaign would have changed boating history. Think bill cosby and cokeHydrostream dreamin

The internet REALLY CHANGED everything. TV ads are a waste of time and money. Marine manufacturers like Mercury only advertise with video media if it connected to a sporting event like bass fishing. The HiPerf stuff like offshore comes and goes but never really sticks around. Even in their apex years of factory racing in the 70's, Merc & OMC only surfaced in sales brochures to pitch HiPerf stuff.

There was no internet in the 80s and most of the 90s tho, really. Just chatrooms, IRC, and random university pages.
