looks like something that was designed with specific constraints which made it way over complicated. like honda making oval pistons with 2 rods to meet a requirement.

I grew up going to Florida City Speedway every Saturday night. All i remember from my childhood was T/Q midgets with Crosley's on alky running on that little 1/8 th mile track. As a kid, they seemed insanely fast.

    Crosley marine engine ...

    http://floridacityspeedway.homestead.com/index.html

A little older ... going to Dade City, Tampa Fairgrounds, Volusia County, Palm Beach .. I was introduced to the little Offy's ... Great times

I remember back when the rules for F-1 were 500cc and 4 cylinders (4 combustion chambers is how I think it was worded.
Honda selling 4 strokes, built a 500 cc 4 stroke engine. (Today it seems acceptable to give four strokes twice the displacement to consider it an even playing field. Seems more like welfare, than racing .. )
They named it the NR500 .. NR for "New racing" I believe ... it quickly changed to NR for ... Not Ready .. which it never came up to speed.
If Honda / Yoshimura couldn't match the two-strokes power per cubic inch .. then no one could... nor can they do it today

That engine has more teeth, than a Leatherback Sea Turtle.

The Turtle's might be more efficient, longer lasting, and less troublesome to maintain.

It depends on what your definition of work ... is ..

Overly complex, top heavy, underpowered, broke under racing conditions, overly expensive ... other than that .. might would have made a so-so 250 .

The RD / YZR 500 series of Yamaha's and even Honda's own NS 500 two strokes were making 200 HP by the time of their demise.

    Gotta love my boy "Two-Stroke stuffing" . 22 HP from 50cc / 3.05 ci

Thats aprox 7.22 HP for each cubic inch ...

The Alfadone .. yea, I could kick the rods out of that POS in the first 5 minutes ... Bearing clearance .. err ... slide block, appears to be a little loose ...

Kid, you do understand that the original Miller (offy) design was from the 1920 / 1930's ...

Chains were heavy and tensioners of the day were not reliable enough to last on the street, let alone go 500 miles WFO at the brickyard.

The Gilmer toothed belt was used in textile mills in the 1940's . The first belt didn't appear until ... 1954 in the Devin-Panhard car. And it wasn't till 1966 that Detroit used them for the first time in a passenger car.

So even though it looks a bit hokey by todays standards .. the gear drive was the most accurate, reliable system of the day.

Don't worry, in a 100 years .. they will look back at us and wonder .. what were those Neanderthals thinking ..

At some point the top road racing class was the same displacement, 4 stroke or two stroke. The engines were limited to 4 cylinders. Honda made an oval piston V4. 8 valves and two con rods per cylinder. It ran but was never as fast as the Yamaha two strokes.

I think if you look close .. you'll see a gold alodine, rear facing roots supercharger nestled between the valve covers.

Chase Knight from Crane cams drove the "Golden gator" T/AD car with a roots and twin's .. never performed up to expectations. I have a good feeling that the supercharged / quad turbo boat is more of a trailer queen than a ... well , you know ..
