    Ride Guide duel steering ?

I took off steering wheel to paint it and the pinion shaft to clean it.Boat never has never turned far enough to port for the engine stops to come together on the swivel on the engine bracket but starboard does.I put new heim joints in and still doesn't go all the way to port even after adjusting the heim joint on the rods.I was wondering if when they installed it the racks were out of time if there is such a thing.it's duel opposing on a 89 xtb-21.thanks

I'll take a shot. I am familiar with ride guide in a side by side configuration. The second cable mirrors the first and the secondary tube its mounted to adjusts to remove lash. I expect on an opposing set up the same idea applies. The time of the rack is something I have not encountered before. I do follow your train of thought. There is really nothing to index one to the second when mounting to the steering post { Pinion rack or whatever you call it.} So I do believe it could be a tooth off out of time as you say.

I seem to remember something similar and it was a "timing issue" or off a tooth or 2. I think I left it bolted together at the engine and removed 1 cable/ rack from the helm assembly. I then turned the wheel hard to one side so it hit the engine stops and let it drag the unbolted cable / rack so it to was fully extended then I bolted the removed cable/ rack back to the helm while it was fully extended. Not sure if my system is the same as yours but I believe Jim is correct synchronizing the cable teeth

I have seen guys take the cables off and hang them up in their shop and shoot PB blaster in the top and sometimes it takes a week for it to work all the way down through it and clean the old crap out

Yes, it is certainly possible the racks were not indexed correctly when installed.
