Omc V8 vs 300x or xs

Im curious if anyone has had any experience either of the mercs performamce compared to a stock v8 evenrude. Also does the v8 consume more or about the same as a 300x. Thanks for any input.

As far as fuel consumption goes at cruising speed it is the 300XS all day long, especially at $6.50 per gallon.

We have never had a V8 omc in our fleet but did have a 235 and it used more fuel then any other outboard that we have ever owned. Comparing an X to an XS; l had both on my Allison and STV. The XS would get just shy of double the distance Vs. the X. This is on our normal run from DeLand FL. to Welatka FL. and back. This run offers approximately 60 miles of river running and turns along with 40 miles of wide open running when conditions allow. I always liked the X motors for the extra rpm capability and would short prop it a few degrees for better mid range and still have got top end. The sound of an X is also drug of sorts.

It takes 10 GPH per 100 HP’s @ WFO, regardless of where they come from.

Its the acceleration to speed and off throttle/run that burns fuel in the older motors.

I had a discussion w/Gordon one time, about a hypothetical, well tuned old school OMC V-8 that everyone says are gas hogs, and asked…,”if it requires X# HP to push a specific hull X# MPH’s wouldn’t the mythical 8 do as good as the rest?”

    His answer was yes.

I still end up liking my old school loopers w/plastic carbs (that everyone hates), w/stock ignition (that everyone hates) , w/a OEM style gear case (that everyone hates), that I can afford to buy parts for and know how to work on

I love the new tech but when I see the prices they’re fetching….., I like my old school junk that much more

    Heck, now they’re classics!
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I agree but in 3 hours of run time, how much of it is pinned? My guess is 20% for the guys who run hard (this includes no wake zones, loading and unloading etc.) Now my tri-toon is a different deal, my guess is 50% of the time is spent at WOT-

We have typically put 60 to 100 gallons a day thru it over the last few weeks. Still one of the best boats we have simply because it's always loaded with friends, laughs, memories, and music.

    100% agreed.

Read above where I said the part throttle and acceleration is what kills the old motors.

    On the pontoons, also agreed.
When we lived in Fla, I worked on a friends 22’ deck boat w/an old XR4 150 on it.

My wife and I fell in love w/that boat!
If we were in an area to better enjoy that type boating, we’d have one.

A good friend is currently relocating to Deland and has a 21’ Talon and a 26’ deck boat and the deck boat is quickly becoming his fav!

I will be back in FL. middle of Sept. Have your buddy call me and we can put him our group for weekday dinner runs and weekend spring outings (we will often have 8 or 10 boats run together). East Central Florida is a tough place to beat for 8 months of the year but LOTO is where its at if you are a performance boat enthusiast for the summer.

Thanks for the replies. Instigator I 100 percent agree with your theory about fuel consuption especially with the 8 being able to swing a large prop at lower cruising rpms. Does anyone have any experience performance wise with either of the 2 mercs conpared to the 8?

Instigator, as best I recall, I think the number is closer to 13 gallons per hour per 100hp as a general rule of thumb for fuel burn.

Fuel consumption issues ... you know how to vote in November ..

Till then ... Palm Beach Kia runs sales every weekend ..

300x and XS motor's make just north of 300 hp.

Jupiter .. ??? You live 30 miles away from the best OMC V-8 guy in the country

I like the E-Tek front half the best. They seem to be more tractable down low .. and yes, both versions are a "bit" more than 300 HP ... LOL

I can't speak for the 300x or 300xs but the Evinrude V8 I had liked its fuel. I know a buddy of mine and I went to several events and ran the same amount and my 22 Rapidcraft with the 300 v8 always burned as much fuel as his DCB 22 with a pair of 280's
