    D-day

June 6, 1944. A day to remember. On this day many many families made the ultimate sacrifice and were forever changed.

Had a dear friend that is gone now... He was a pilot of a C-47 in WWII... Pulled gliders, dropped paratroopers, and even flew reconnaissance missions. Came in with heavy damage several times, even losing his copilot. He was one of the few that told of his experiences. I wish I would have recorded it. He flew a fighter on a low level reconnaissance mission once in a Spitfire if I remember right. His mission was to fly by this house, and depending on which side the ladder was on, was the sign!!!

I was a pallbearer at his funeral. He was my hero!

I am good friends with his daughter. He had so many pictures documenting it. I am looking at a special scanner that specializes in black and whites. It would be awesome to be able to share them. I have seen them... The damage from flack on the planes was horrific. How he made it to the ground, on MORE than one occasion, is amazing!!! He also flew C-46 for a while, which he considered a death trap.

I so miss that old man!

Who else knows this? There was no US Air Force in WWII. It was the Army Air Corps.

My Dad was a navigator on a B17, stationed in Kimbolton, England. Shot down January, 1944. So on D-Day, he was a POW, at Stalag 1, by the north sea.

I live approx 350miles away from the Normandy coast. I've been there a couple times and spent past (long) weekend there. It's always very touching. Here is a picture of a restored C4Click image for larger version.

I knew that. My godfather flew a P-47 Razorback.
