150 Mercury XRI no power and hard start
1994 0G061997 Mercury XRI 150 18ft Ranger 375V
Boat sat for about 18 months, previously no issues in the 10 years of ownership
Went to get it running and the battery was dead dead, just had been put in a few months before it sat.
Got a new battery and for the first time ever the motor was having a hard time starting, finally got it to idle and headed to the water.
Once in the water we idled the boat for a ways to let it warm up, went to get up on plane and it seems to lose all power almost to the point of dying.
It idles fine all day and does well until trying to plane out.
Things i have tried/replaced
Compression 120-125 on all cylinders
Spark to all cylinders
Rebuilt pulse pump
New primer bulb and lines
Cleaned screen after electric pump, replaced screen before pump
Verified fuel pressure both during idle and also while the boat was acting up and its 34-36 psi with a leakdown to about 30 psi after several minutes
New water separator filter
New spark plugs BUH8
New trigger because the insulation was cracking at the coils
Tried the cheap switch boxes from Amazon, these have since been removed
Pulled injectors and checked the screens and verified pulse with a 9 volt
New stator because the high side tested right at the low threshold on cranking reading with DVA
I have not test drove the boat since the stator change but i will be here in a day or so but, im not really hopeful since the hard starting is still present
Also tried a voltage test on the TPS, in nuetral im reading .25 but wide open im only getting 3.94 , im wondering how accurate my readings ar as i dont have the test harness
I was using the small wire in the female pins on the plug( the temp sensor wire was disconnected)
Im steadily running out of ideas(and budget)
ANY ideas?

I would say ECU or injectors. You could have an injector or two clogged or stuck open and they would do just that. If they pulse it means nothing. Well, next to nothing. It tells you that the injector isn't dead, but it doesn't tell you if its functioning.
I would send them out and have them tested: both the ecu and the injectors.

I have been wondering about the ECU
Im off Monday so I’ll test the stator but I’m not holding out high hopes
Also I’ll start calling around local to see if anyone has an ECU I can try local
If not I’ll probably have to send it off

It’s worth every dime to have your injectors professionally cleaned and flowed. Especially with it sitting ten years. Welcome to scream and fly. Good luck!

you do want to use resistor plugs
either BUZH8 or cheaper BR8HS10 with the ground electrode better resistance against fouling

So with the DVA as soon as I probe the wires my meter reads 11.3
Upon cranking it goes from 11.3 to 35.6 … does this sound correct?
I will add that I do not have that specific test harness either but I was able to slide my leads into the back of the rubber seal connector and contact the pins from behind.

Sounds about right.
Have you put a timing light on it, after you replaced the trigger?
You might also check the kill circuit on switch boxes for bleed thru voltage from a bad ignition switch. I'm not sure this would cause the problems your having, but you never know. I would rather troubleshoot, vs buy parts.Last edited by OnPad; 06-08-2022 at 11:14 AM.

I have not checked the timing
could it go “out of time” just sitting?

No, but can when you replace a trigger.

Ahh gotcha makes sense
ill have to get a light
When I installed the trigger I counted the amount of turns the old one was threaded into the barrel that screws into the eyelet of the trigger, I did not adjust the length of the linkage front to back any at all, hopefully that makes sense … my typing is not the greatest

It sounds like you have done almost enough swapnostics to eliminate most problems. As long as the swapped parts were not defective? It's very possible your injectors are fouled from storage, as mentioned in above posts.
There is also a test that could be done on your fuel pressure regulator to eliminate it as a problem.
Not trying to be a dick. You could of saved yourself $$$ and headache, by getting a grasp on electrical system testing. Your farther ahead than most, with the purchase of a dva.
I would recommend getting a service manual, if you don't have one, you can download one for a minimal fee, possibly free. Or purchase a paper copy from Ebay.
Your typing skills are better than Dave S, after he's been drinking ethanol!!!

Haha yea I tried not to do the whole swapnostics thing
But in my defense the trigger was checking good but was physically cracked on the outside
The stator was checking at 26.4 cranking on the high side and the manual states 25-50 is acceptable range for cranking so I figured I’d try it
In my opinion most of the other stuff I’ve done probably needed to be done anyway for preventative reasons so that’s how I justified those parts to myself lol
Ill be heading to water sometime today to test after the stator replacement and
I have read the fuel pressure both at idle and during attempted acceleration on the water and it holds at 34-36 psi
