Does any have an oil injected carb Yamaha? CCMS rebuilt now too
I have a 3 cyl 40hp on a small (13 foot) classic Whaler. These seem to be still quite popular motors. I see them in Mexico powering Pangas and still quite a few running small fishing skiffs in Florida. I love the feather weight and the power for this light boat.
It had been a great motor until a couple of yeas ago when the oil began leaking out of the tank and eventually scored a piston. So I had CCMS rebuild it. Chris recommended removing the oil injection. Which I did. But I have not gotten around to firing it up yet since the rebuild. This will be my immediate project over the next few weeks.
I don’t mind pre mixing. I do it all the time on our 2.0l 150 that we love to death. Just trying to gauge and see if I’m going to be the only one here running one of these little Yammies with the oil injection disconnected to see how much help is available here in case I need it.
Anyone share their own thoughts and experience with these motors?

Good motors, good oil injection. It doesn't matter if you remove it or not you still have the same motor that anyone here can give you advice on if they've had experience with them...whether you have oil injection or not.
Oil injection removal is ALWAYS safe. If you are gonna do any performance upgrades on it ever in the future then I'd ditch the oil injection cause it gives you more control if you feel you need more oil. If you are keeping it stock its whatever you wish really.

So I have not fired up this motor since CCMS rebuilt it. I remember Chris saying over the phone that the best way to balance the carbs is something like: bump up the idle, pull two of the three plug wires, turn the mixture screw on the running carb until it runs fastest, then quarter turn richer. Do that for all three. That is not in the manual. But does it sound right?

Call him back and ask him, I'm sure he will be glad to tell you again. Everyone does it differently and he's a very helpful and knowledgeable guy. I never do it that way, but it might be the easiest way for you...
No, stuff like that is not in the manual.
