OMC, RCA TVs, & British motorcycles - left behind.

Digital electronics is a case study in business. Vision, constant innovation, and business smarts keeps the company’s door open, producing, and selling. Unfortunately we older adults have seen the demise of some of the manufacturing brands we grew up with.

I witnessed Japanese motorcycles dominate the USA market in the 1970s. This was followed in the 1980s by Japanese cars commandeering the USA small-car market. And then Japanese outboards became a competitive player too.

OMC, British motorcycles and American television manufactures were brands, which Japanese technology and quality at competitive prices, helped contribute to their eventual market-share demise.

Tesla cars has now resurrected the electric power-plant as an innovation where other manufactures (and probably some reluctantly) need to invest in the new platform. I say reluctantly because the old guard (American, German, Japanese, etc.) automotive companies have had to redesign, retool, and source new suppliers, etcetera.

A competent industry leader prevents falling behind global competition, in the domestic market share.

Remember British motorcycles leaking oil, and Harley did too decades ago.

I have my Lotus parked on oil ‘carpet’ as it does leak a bit.

Munro and associates do tear down videos. They compared the Model 3 which has been around for a while to newer competitors. Tesla still does some things a lot better. The legacy guys need to catch up or they will repeat the past.

Someone makes a leak board that goes under MG cars like I have.

It has a rating system on them for the size of your oil leak!

If it’s a small leak it tells you to check your oil, if it’s a large leak it tells you you have a leaking gasket that needs repaired, if there is no leak it says absolutely do not drive your car as it has no oil in it!

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

In addition to RCA, let's not forget about MagnaVox, Zenith, and those monstrous wooden stereo combo furniture units they came in!

On my Porsche I call it an oil "seep", not a leak. When you have a dry sump with 9 quarts it is a whole different world...

And then there is the air cooled thing. After a month or so of sitting, I have to let it run and "burn off" the "seep".

If you take of and just drive it, there will be smoke in the car. Best to let it burn off.

Call this bad, but it is 50 years old and all original.

    That isn't seep, it's a gravity pre-lube system.

Years ago a friend of mine got to ride in an old World War II warbird. DC-3 I think?

    Twin radial motors.
His seat was right by the wing and the motor.
He said as they were sitting on the tarmac warming the motors when he saw a steady flow of oil coming out of the motor by his window.

Went and got the pilot to alert him to the condition.
Pilot came back and looked out the window, looked at my buddy and said, that’s not a leak and went back and climbed in the pilot seat and they took off!!

WWII, that would have been a C-47 (Douglas C-47 Skytrain). The commercial model was a DC-3. I had a friend that flew C-47s in the war... Pulled gliders with them too. Man the stories he used to tell. The pictures of beat up planes with holes in the wings...Lost his copilot on one mission. Blew a big hole in the cockpit...I saw the pictures... amazing courage... He was my hero!!! And I proudly carried him to his grave. I miss that old man!!!

Never seen a radial that did not leak... Or as I call "seep". They rolled the old radials over manually after they had been sitting to get the oil out of the bottom cylinders. Other wise they would lock up.

I was looking for a video but have yet to find it... Has a bunch of guys taking turns grabbing a prop blade and spinning it over before start up.
