    Im stuck. Who builds sporties?

I mean...who builds them ALL the time. Not youve built 1, 2, 5 in your life. I mean ALLL THE TIME.
I got something weird going on that I've not experienced yet in building a bunch, so I would like a contact of someone to call that I could talk to for 20 or 30 min about what I have going on. Someone who just maybe has had the same problem I'm having in the past.

The issue has to do with how the fwd gear needle bearing is inserted from the front on 1.62 and 1.75 gearsets and from the back on 1.87, 2.0 and 2.3 ratios.

Trae Applin in Pearland, TX used to build a bunch and did great work for me on several.

Glen Reynolds (Reynolds Racing) in Harriman, TN built several for our race team.

I have heard Craig Colabella in FL does a bunch but I have no personal experience.

Ok, thank you all for the responses, I gave a few people calls and it seems I got it all set up right despite some odd characteristics I had never seen before in a merc lower. I will run it and then tear it down to check the wear patterns.

First off the bat pinion height was way too high even with no shims. Like 0.032" with no shim under the upper D.S. bearing race.
Keep in mind this was being build from and empty case I purchased and had no guts to reference off of.
Every part I bought (bearings and all) were genuine merc parts. About $2500 in guts from propshaft to driveshaft to gears, all new.
Once I got the the pinion set at the right height I went to set the driveshaft endplay with the second bearing and it was too tight. WAY too tight with no shim under it. In order to achieve <0.001" of driveshaft endplay and no drag I had to put a 0.020" shim under the upper D.S. bearing race.
That, of course, raised my pinion 0.020" too high, so I had to find a shim that dropped the pinion back down and kept the driveshaft bearings in the same place...
Then my fwd gear backlash was way too tight with no shim in front of the forward gear race...same deal all over again.
It was a pain in the ass.
I have built sporties in the past, I've built CLEs, I've built 3.0L cases, Alphas, big bearing, small bearing, preloaded, XR6... but never have I had one this far out of spec.

I have a manual for all the 3 l merc cases but not the 2.5,s, if I had to guess u got a refurbished case empty, I highly doubt any of the specs would be right anyway, I honestly never had luck with reman. Cases ,who knows the life they had. ,as u know building what you have said, keeping the ( tolerances) right is a case by case, and shim by shim difference, crazy you used new parts and still have the differences,I would put my money on craig still , man does immaculate work, I bet he could tell you if anyone could

How did you overcome the .032 height issue in the off the bat issue.?
Then how did you shim the pinion down in the .020 issue.
Sounds like a drive shaft issue.
    Or maybe a tooling issue
    Or a bearing spec/number issue

Magic. Yeah it was like the fwd gear or fwd tapered bearing was wrong and the driveshaft was machined wrong. I didn't really want to get into all the specific here thats why I called someone smarter than me...
It was a weird one and every thing was wrong. EVERYTHING. Even propshaft endplay.

Long story short, dont buy 1.62 or 1.75 gearsets for 2.5s. The 1.62 is NLA and the 1.75 will probably be the same soon...so it won't be an issue going forward. 1.87 and 2.0 gears are better

I just hope the 1.87 gear sets remain available.
I use second hand sets and buy up lower units when they come up, but sooner or later I'll need a new set.
Right now the US exchange rate isn't helpful though

There are some companies that make damn good gears and high performance stuff. Clutches, gears, propshafts etc. But they all do omc stuff. I dont know of anyone who does aftermarket sporty gears that are reputable. There are some aftermarket gears on eBay, but they aren't that much cheaper than oem...so to me its not worth taking a chance
