    1. Mine is a 2-stroke, so can only assume they act alike? No beep at startup
    2. Overheat alarm is steady alarm.
    3. 2 stroke will not save itself, you keep running it will seize up.
    4. Not exact motor but might be helpful. untitled (endeavorsuite.com)

    Mine also a 2stroke
waiting for impeller kit but have done compression and borescope check and all about 110-120 psi so no damage there.
Still trying to find manual that's not months away to get.
Before it started to overheat would bog when giving throttle anything above idle... sounded like 4 cycling.
Late last year if throttle was 3/4 or more would bog down after about a minute, but less throttle could run for miles.
replace fuel line from tank to engine last year.
Replaced fuel pump, carb hoses, and checking fuel PSI today.
Attached is photo of piston that looks much different than other 2.
Looking at wash area does this look like very rich?

    thanks

That looks like aluminum on piston to me, will let some others verify that. If it's only 1 cylinder, I would look at that carb real close, also that oil line if oil injection is hooked up. Check your thermostat, just 2 bolts. The cylinder head is easy to get off for observation, i would do that if the carb and water pump kit don't fix it. You most likely will need a new head gasket if you pull cylinder head.

Just thought of something else to look at. It should have the automatic choke on it. Yamaha calls it an enrichment circuit. It could be causing the 4 stroking. There is a red lever by the middle carb. You can turn the enrichment circuit to On, Off or automatic with that red lever. Try turning it off and see if anything changes.

Got back into this project, found needed impeller kit but still wouldn't "P" enough water.
Found thermostat plugged with impeller bits
Good water now and not overheating... head temp about 120*F
Idles fine but when going about 1/2 throttle after a few minutes bogs down and stalls.
    compression 108-112
    Bores have very minor scratches
From photos does it look like water was getting in to lower cylinder?

To me the cylinders look fine, if one was having water ingestion, it should be washed down.

When you changed impeller did you change whole kit of just impeller?

Are you getting any alarms, or is motor just bogging down and stalling? If no alarm, i would suggest checking the alarm circuit.
How to Troubleshoot a Yamaha Outboard Alarm (goneoutdoors.com)

To me it sounds like it might be overheating, but hard to diagnose over internet. With impeller chunks in the thermostat, could easily still be more inside the powerhead. I have had to pull powerhead to get water passages fully cleaned before when a impeller disintegrates, not an easy job. With the head off, you could try back flushing the cooling system also, might remove some more debris.

From the first few pics, to me , it looks like water is getting inside the cylinders. That looks like water beads on top of the pistons and yes this is how your motor would react.
Check for water in your gas tank first if I am correct.

The old 60, 65, 70 and 75 OMC 49 cubic inch were notorious for sucking in water from a bad exhaust gasket

Head gasket was the fix. Got about 4 hours run time and all well. I now just to figure out when No beep when turning key on, if it has that feature.

Good deal, relatively easy fix. Check the link I posted, will help with alarm diagnosis.
