    300R Fourstroke Oil Capacity

This is a new to me Mercury Racing 300R. I drained the oil to find it had about 8.5 quarts of oil which seems to me it might have been over filled. I put 6 quarts back in which put it just above the second bead. From what I can find that is a good level for these motors. Just confused how I drained off 8.5 quarts. Thanks for any input.

How many hours on it when that happened? I own a 300R and I did the first oil change around 25 hours. I would have to go back and look at my records but it also had around 7 - 7.5 qts of oil in it. It "made oil" due to oil dilution by the fuel getting past the rings. My engine had some issues that Don resolved, and I had poor ring seal due to not breaking it in hard enough. Eventually this issue improved due to Don taking care of some engine issues and me "re-breaking" it in due to Don's recommendations. It has improved now, but still makes some oil, but I drive it easy most of the time.

It was a dealer demo I bought that had around 80 hours on it with one oil change. So this is the first oil change I have done since owning it and it has about 115 hours on it now.

Just some free advice from a life long mechanic... but not a marine mechanic.... Put some non synthetic oil in it... Go run it hard for a few trips. Make sure its propped correctly, warm it up and go stand on it. Make it pull hard through the whole RPM band a few times. Let it cool off. Go do it again. If its still making oil by the time its due for the next change I would say you have ring seal issues that are not going to be fixed without new rings.

Thanks for the help I will keep an eye on it and if it raises I will give the oil deal a try.
