WOW how things have Changed!! This race when first started was a Who Can Sail from Fla to Va Beach the fastest. Basically it was a 24 Hr (meaming Teams could Sail Day and Night if they chose) 1000 Mile by water Race using a 16' Hobi cat only!!!. The next year it had established Call the Restaurant check points but no stop over. Check in and Hit the water again. It all started as a bar bet at Worrel Brothers Restaurant & Bar on Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach between Chris and Michael Worrel.. I knew Chris Worrel and his Cousin Heider personally and Michael, Chris's Brother was more of a Hey How ya doing acquaitance. It used to be all over every Radio station up and down the East Coast. Now Days basically after 1999/2000 you barely ever hear anything about it. Chris Passed of Cancer and Michael hAas also Passed.

Thanks for the link - by chance, do you know why Hobie quit making their bigger catamarans ? They use to make a 17, 18 and 20 - now they just make the Hobie 16 - just no interest in the bigger boats I suppose ?

Dont have a clue?? The 16 was Hot to trot back in the Day and easily managable by one person. Maybe that had something to do with it. I tried my Hand at The Cat scene. But never could totally embrase it over something with Power.

Exactly!! Its gotten So Hi Tec That the Average person That sails Cats cant Compete. The required stop overs alone have to cost a few Thousand Dollars. The Check in spots are all High End Hotels/ Kind of Like What The Americas Cup used to be Back in the Day. Now everything has gotten so High Tec with teams dumping 10's of Thousands of Dollars into Reasearch, Alone to come up with the Fasest design. The average person cant afford the Cat let alone all the High Tec Composits that go into the build and Engineering, Models, Designs etc.

For Giggles I checked the first 7 Required check points and layovers for pricing. And theres 6 more after that. Each Team is easly looking at $2500.00 in Hotel fees alone.
    1 $269.00
    2 $199.00
    3 $172.00
    4 $130.00
    4 $229.00
    6 $249.00
    7 $260.00
    $$1498.00

Like Bud said, this used to be a huge deal every year. Even this racing has priced itself out of reach for many.

A few of the teams are from Virginia Beach, Some Florida, Australia, Netherlands, Outer Banks etc. But All the teams usually Have a road crew that travels from Check Point to Check point with Supplies and the trailer should something happen to the Boat. So those hotel accomidations could easily Double or Tripple per team. And the Boat!!! I Just found a used once 2020 NARCA for sale at a steal of $24,000.00 NO Trailer. https://www.thebeachcats.com/classifieds/catamarans-for-sale/p17052.html

Something else thats interesting is The Most Popular Cat in this race (The NARCA f18) is Made right under my Nose about 25 miles South of me in Point Harbor NC. https://www.eastcoastsailboats.com/nacra-f18-evolution/
