Fletcher 16 arrowsport transom restauration
Not the super fast stuff you guys are used to, but anyway.
I own a 16ft fletcher with (currently) a 115hp 4 cyl merc. Top speed is around 85 kmh / 53mph with a laserII 24p
I recently picked up a Mercury 2.5 150 (XR6) on a XL mid and a (broken) 135 hp 2L on a L mid.
Swapped the 2.5 onto the L mid and added alien cowl
Also bought a 6 inch jackplate which i will mount.
Unfortunatly, my transom is not in the best shape. Besides that, its only rated for 90hp (still original btw).
The boat takes a beating every now and then (bussy river with cargo ships and waves). So the plan is to replace the transom
Managed to seperate the hull
and had to drill out the transom to get it loose on the rear. The transom is very wide (1.8meter / 70 inch)
The transom is not perse rotten, more like cracked. At some places the wood is wet, but not super duper wet. Anyway im suprised by the way the transom was build
There is almost no fiberglass on the inside of the transom. Only at the top 15cm / 6inch the folded a couple of sheets of glass around the top.
Sideview transom (red = gelcoat, green = glass, light brown = wood, Dark brown = upper scale
But now the real work starts.
Time to take out the wood and restart.
This is my first time with a large fiberglass project so tips are welcome!
Once the wood is out, im starting to glass the transom with 2 sheets of 350 (?) to have a fresh base
Add peanutbutter
Then a sheet of wood (halve of the thickness)
Then 2 more sheets of glass
Add peanutbutter
THen another sheet of wood
And put glass again (mix of woven and csm).
Remove the rear 50cm of the 2 center stringers. Replace them new fresh stringers with integrated transom knees.
Not sure if this last thing is a good idea btw.
How does that sound
Will keep you updatedLast edited by killerpirate; 05-04-2022 at 06:53 AM.
