My first 3.0L EFI 225 Issue
It's a late 90s Merc 225hp 3.0L EFI - Ran the engine on the water yesterday for the first time, runs great except for at idle it will hiccup or stutter a little bit...Happens usually when putting the shifter into neutral from forward or reverse, like it is going to stall out when I put it into neutral...Mostly annoying when coming into the dock or trailer as you get in and out of neutral the engine stutters and rpms drop but never stalls out. Hope I am making sense... What do you think can cause that issue?

Haven't been in a manual in a while but sounds like it's equipped with a shift interrupter switch. So that hiccup could very well be normal. I think it's supposed to help it get into and out of gear. If it's really hard to deal with it could be sticking out possibly have a misadjusted shift cable. JMHO of course

i can’t say I was able to adjust the shift cable any better tonight but I did notice the sensor under the shifter groove, so I’ll unplug that and see how it runs this weekend
i also noticed it takes 2 or 3 turns of the key to start even after the ball is hard, the first turn sounds like a choked carb and then the second turn it fires n idles, is that anything to worry about?
I will pay more attention to the idle itself this weekend because if it’s stuttering or sneezing it might be a bad reed??

There is a plastic slider that the shift cable bolts to. It has a little detent that the nose of the switch rides in. Over time it wear's into a long slot. Take the plastic slide out, turn it around .. drop it back in .. now you have a brand new slide.
If it sounds like a horse sneezing .. on cold start-ups .. the reeds are getting tortured. Makes me cringe every time I hear one do it ...
I always take a minute to lift the cowl , squirt some gas in the intake .. run it on the hose before heading to the ramp ..

Adjusted the shift cable as best I could and didn't seem to make much difference on the water. Didn't do anything with the gear position switch yet...I noticed even at idle speeds likes 1-2mph the engine will sputter every once in a while you can see the puff of air come out the prop center as the rpms drop...
I am thinking I need to check on the reeds, do you think the reeds could be causing that issue?
How easy it is to take the EFI components off to get at the reeds? It would be nice to keep everything connected and take off the intake in mostly one piece without having to adjust anything after putting it back on...

Might check the tps out. They wear out from use and age then get sloppy and glitchy. The fiber reefs are a good update too since the 3.0 motors eat reeds.
