You just explained why Southern Michigan (south of US 10 basically) winters suck ass.
It's flat, muddy, slushy, and bitter cold with minimal snow fall.
I lived in Marquette (college years) and the winters were awesome, waist deep snow on the ground that never melted from Christmas - easter, plenty of snowshowing, skiing, snowmobiles, jeep rides, ice fishing, etc to keep you busy with out sloshing around the the southern michigan (ohio) mud slush and garbage.
Not to mention the 300' tall ski hills down here that make "snow" (what they really mean is they grind up ice with the snow cat pushing it around and call it snow)......
Even the 500'-750' elevation hills in northern michigan are 'better' but not really all that fun once you've been out west......
Michigan's true charm is the lakes, beaches, and summer weather (in my opinion) - I can do with out December-March.
My experience with Ohio is similar, he lake erie shoreline is nice, the hocking hills area is nice, the rest reminds me of central/lower michigan - flat farmlands with out much to offer.

New York State's Hudson River, Mohawk River, Champlain Canal, and Erie Canal system is a 500 mile one way adventure that connects 6 lakes. Only salt water is from NYC north about 30 miles of Hudson River.
