I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Several years ago I had a sale to eliminate some of my stuff and there was a Connely Hook in a case standing in a corner. Curious shopper aske dwhat it was so I pulled it out of the case and showed her. Said something about using it as a decoration so I gave it to her. Don't see me ever being on a water ski again.

I forgot all about that ski. I learned on a smaller copy, maybe a Ricky McCormick "Lil' Monster"? When I outgrew the Lil' Monster I moved up to "El Diabalo" that had a grooved bottom. I don't think the ski would stay still under you no matter how strong you were, but that doesn't matter on a slalom, you are supposed to be turning. The El Diabalo really went when you pointed it where you wanted to go. You could feel the rope stretch, it felt like you could break the rope or pull your arms out of the sockets if you turned to hard. The next skis we had were the Taperflex skis. They were fun for hoping completely from wake to wake and feeling the ski wiggle in the air.
