Best prop for a 1979 Hydrostream Viking with 1996 Promax

I have Bob's hydraulic 6" setback. Have a ET 28" prop now and it's too much pitch and bow lift.

If I was asked where to start with your boat/motor combo my guess would have been 28" ET or chopper. I know the chopper creates more bow lift than some people like but I have ran a bunch of Streams and most all the boats liked the lift. Search for a 26 chopper and see what ya think. Good news is they are a bunch more available and a crap load cheaper than the ET. I have heard many swear by the cleaver style wheel on a Stream but my experience has been the opposite. I am assuming the hull has been checked and deemed correct. Many soggy bottom Streams out there. Good luck.

I don’t have an et yet it’s one of the few I have yet to acquire. I really like the choppers too it doesn’t take much trim at all to carry the hull. I’m with Rock, check the hull for weirdness. Is the pad still flat and true or is it wonky? Inspect the bilge area. If it’s black or dark in there that’s not good

Home many rpms are you turning with your 28 ET?
    3 or 4 blade?
Prop to pad height, running wfo?
    Trim angle wfo?

If your tach is accurate, you should be pulling at least another 1000 rpm with that prop. I turn a 28p 4 blade signature eagle 6000 rpm on a 20' bullet with a 200 xri, same prop with 3 blades turns 6500.
I also spin a 28p 4 blade cleaver on a ltv to 6300 rpm with a 150 supermag. I run them about 2 inchs higher than you, but I still think you should be close to max rpm with your prop.

You should check your tach accuracy, if it's good, check you timing, fuel filters, or screen in your fuel pressure regulator, If that stuff is ok check out your ignition system, like your high speed side of stator.

From my experience a 3 blade et, Yamaha drag, or trophy, are easy to drive, but they all gave me too high of slip #'s, to a achieve the top speed I was looking for. Have a few choppers 26-28p that load my engines better, but feel a little squirrely. My cleaver is easy to drive also, but I think they can lift a lite pad v to much in the rear causing instability.

I think if you can’t turn a 28 either the boat or the motor has issues. Is the boat restored?

It goes against what most say, but I run a 29p tempest thats worked over. It runs neg. trim at speed. Same prop as on my avatar.

Every boat is different but I don't think you should be having any issues with too much bow lift.
Based on your RPM's i might double check engine height. It could be lower then you thought. Bring is up and you should see less bow lift and more RPM.
What are you running for a gear case?

No, mercury made a 29" pitch tempest. This one has a shortened barrel and some blade tip work along with some blade thinning.

That’s cool I’ll be keeping an eye out for one. I’ve never seen a 29 tempest before I have a 27 I thought that was the tallest one they made

How is it too much pitch? What makes you say that? Trying to get a feel for what you got going on. I run a 30ET on a stock 98 ProMax and its about the perfect prop. Out of the hole well and pulls hard in the mid range as well as mid 90's with ease. I ran a 28ET and loved it, but hit the limiter too soon for my quest to 100mph. Maxed the 28 at 91mph.

Where about in Minnesota? I'm in the north metro. May be able to help in person.

I have a big ear 28 chopper bone stock I can turn 6500 on a bass boat with a promax, my 200 ff motor would spin it 6k or 6100ish , I would say something else is goin on like others r saying. I run a worked 26 trophy on my bass boat now and it will turn 7k+ which gives me great hole shot and incredible mid range , mark Crofton worked it and did a great job on it. I also have a 28 chopper I think like Allison cut and it runs great but I can't get bow lift I need from it
