Your 18.6 Baker is a very solid hull that will get across some sloppy conditions with ease and fun.
I would invest money in your LU (Bobs nose cone) which will help with overall lift and allow you to run it higher.
Running even with the bottom will allow you to spin higher RPM's. IMO you need to find a prop that will carry your Baker in the 6500 to 6800 range. That's where the powers at and the black fishing motors can take it. It takes time, testing and money to see improvement and then you want more.

I’ve done an oil injection delete, new plugs, and impeller. Anything else to make sure I don’t toast it at those high RPMS?

Metal caged rod bearings would be nice over 6k,and better rod bolts.

This was my 85 Baker that started my addiction.
It was a former boat show boat that was rigged with a 145 Rude when I bought it in 96.
It was a light layup, you could not walk on the bow. I swap out the 145 for an 82 merc 150.
Sending my LU to have a Bobs nose cone installed was the best investment I did which allowed me to test many props.
This hull eventually received a 81 225 which hurt alot of feelings

I have one of those old 225's, bought it for the preload driveshaft $500. Giant carbs and a 7 petal front. Would make a pretty potent motor if front was swapped to a later rear half.

These fishing motors were built to run. I would do a compression test to see were you're at. IMO if everything is stock and not messed with on your motor then let it rip. These fishing motors have been running around the world with no problems

I’ve got 130 PSI in all cylinders. Within 1 PSI.

I ran an XR4 on a Hydrostream Virage, which was a sort of tunnel. It went a lot faster with the gearcase higher. I blew up 3 gearcases. My best prop on that boat was a Hoss Hyperdrive. A Trophy worked almost as well

Thanks for the great insight. What kind of RPMS were you running on your motor when the gearcase let go?

My XR4 would run 6000 rpm and no more. The XR4 has a timing box that retards the timing past around 5600 rpm. I was told to remove the box and run premium. Never did. I liked cheaper gas.

All my gearcases were coned. I ran them submerged except when running for top speed in an attempt to lengthen gearcase life.

The motor later went on an SS2000 and went a lot faster.

If you can get your hands on a big ear Chopper you might be surprised and the amount of bow lift as the motor is raised. Choppers can be amazing on some boats and I would bet you would be shocked at how well you boat would handle.

    Best wishes always, Carter Powell

I've got a 24" chopper and a Mazco RE 4 that has been repitched to 23" from 24. Both have lots od bow lift. Mazco might need new hub. 350$ each plus the freight. Bobby 912/484-1825 text please.
