    Trophy, Chopper, or Tempest?

    ‘89 XR4… 18.6 Baker Tunnel… 4.25” gearcase… 12” of setback… hydraulic Jackplate

Currently running 2”-3” below the pad. Since last post, tried a modified 24 Laser II, ran 5800 RPM, 60MPH. Have to trim a lot to feel the bow start to carry. I’ve been reading about some people blocking off the upper intake on the lower to raise the motor up and maintain pressure. I haven’t found a write up on that at all. I’m guessing 24P is where I should be. Trying not to raise the motor to the moon and blow up this lower.

    Thoughts?

I would think you would have to run a trophy or over the hub prop like a chopper with the small gearcase. Not quite sure how you pulled off running a laser.
At 2" I would worry about losing water pressure, without scoops on a stock lower.
How many intake hole are on those xr cases, if only 4 I doubt you can afford to block any. If 8 like a regular case you can block 3 top holes.

Somebody did a little bit of grinding on the first 1” of the prop hub to bring the diameter down so it fits. It’s a VERY tight fit, but doesn’t rub. I guess it does only have the 4 holes now that I look at it.

That's probably to high to run a laser, and trophy can be a bit finicky if run too low, seems like they like slipping pretty bad till you get them high enough. At least that's my experience with a full size case, probably better on a small case.
Might want to try a chopper or e.t. style prop.
    Think about a nosecone on a 4 3/4" case.
I don't have any experience with the 4 1/4" case.
Have heard they are the fastest, but don't hold up well running on the surface. I think you can modify them too make em a little more durable.
Any time you get a engine mounted high, you start losing the ability too carry the bow. In fact when you get a little higher than you are currently, it will start pushing the bow down. Prop design, and mounting height, make a huge difference when running high on the plate.
I'm running a ltv and a bullet at 2 1/4" above pad, with 4 blade props, with 2.5 fishing motors.

Well sounds like I need a prop with strong bow-lifting properties that doesn’t mind running high. I think once I pair this with my setup it’ll come alive. Fastest I’ve run is with a no name prop, unknown pitch. Ran 62 mph at only 5100 rpm full throttle. Obviously not the right fit.

What is an appropriate price to pay for a used 24P OTH chopper? Don’t want to get burned.

Seems to be quite a few on ebay, in the $300 range for a good one. You could put up a wanted ad on this site.
24p is pretty common, and alot easier to find vs a 28p or 30p.
Does anyone else have any input on running a chopper that low? Or a trophy on a 4 1/4" case?
I've always run them higher with a lwp.

I’ll take a peak on eBay and see. If someone else has a prop the right fit here, I’ll consider that.

I learned a couple things yesterday. Might interest someone.
Laser props are small barrel in even pitch sizes, large barrel in odd pitch sizes.
Chopper prop supposedly will not fit a 4 1/4" case with the weedcutters still intact.
Slim pickings on ebay, unless you want a small ear, and prices are up.

Unfortunately the prices on everything are up. Such is life under this admin…. I think I’m going to shoot for a chopper with cutters removed, or remove them myself.

In 86 the center sponson was notched forward to help with lift.

Your Baker is now an open bow which probably added some weight to the nose. I would suggest running a 24 Trophy plus, keep an eye on your water pressure and see if you can get your LU to 1" below.

Don't test with too much fuel. If your having problems carrying the bow or porpoising have someone sit opposite of you in the rear seat.

Is the 12" of set back added on to the built in setback of the hull design?

You don't have to run 2" above the pad to make this Baker run. With some testing, setup's and prop's you should be able to get into the lower 70's

It has 12” of setback in addition to the notched sponson. It is set up the way it left the factory. I will absolutely try a trophy plus if I can get my hands on one used.

Thanks! It just got a new paint job, and interior was redone a couple years ago.
