You're close. My 1969 Fiat 124 sport spider. You can just see my 64 Austin Healy Sprite, behind the Fiat. This was going on in Late, 73, and 74. The gas crisis, and all. Even though the Fiat had double overhead cams, 334 more cc's, 4 wheel disc. brakes, and a 5 spd., the the Sprite could beat it in the first couple of gears, and get an honest 40 mpg, on the hwy. By late 1974, I got rid of them for a 1967 Cougar, 289, 4 spd, headers, 4 barrel, and 3.56 gears...Murica !!
91 Seaswirl 178 spyder sport. Evinrude XP175. (59 MPH, so far, and so close).

Always like the 124 Fiats.
I assume yo know what FIAT stands for??
Fix
It
Again
Tony!
Bought a ‘1980 (I think) Fiat Strada for my wife (at the time) after my dad put the guilt trip on me for letting her drive her unpredictable (never broke down!), 15 yr old, 120,000 mile Buick.
Their version of a VW Rabbit.
Was only a few yrs old and as new.
The wife had a 1/2 hr commute to work and that damn thing would just shut off, half way there!
Id get a friend and tow strap and go get it and the thing would start right up!
Not sure how many times it did this but, was to the point that every time the phone rang at work, it scared me!
Finally, one time on the freeway, both us in it, I hit the horn and the wipers came on!
Thrn the dash caught fire! Same time.
That was the end of that car!
We we’re poor at that time and my mom always teased me after I told her that once I could afford to, I was going to find/buy that car, set it on fire and drive it off a cliff!
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Finally getting it sorted/tuned.
Rebuilt SU’s, new elec fuel pump, and after chasing mid range bogs, finally have it pulling 5500 through the gears!
Now to find a donor motor to whittle on.
The new e-bay rims/tires made a huge cosmetic improvement!I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

As a gear head, interesting tid bit, I cannot get it to run w/my home made ram air system!
W/it off, it runs perfect.
W/it on, it falls on its face at 3400!
Carb throats are only 1 1/2” ID and PVC is 2 1/2” so I am shocked at results.
Any larger PVC would bad so no to 3”.
Moss Motors sells one almost identical w/o the ram air funnel and is formed one pc plastic.
I even clean up the joints when assembling and used gradual 90’s for the bends.
One of the good thinks w/cheap experiments is, if they fail, so what?I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Could it be you aren't getting enough fuel with the increase in air flow.
This might give you some insight. ---> https://www.mginfo.co.uk/upgrades4mg..._su_carbs.html
Maybe you need to ground the plastic pipe. All that air moving across the PVC can create a static charge. Maybe it's causing some "twilight zone" problem?-----------------------

I have read/studied most of what has been written and is trusted on the SUs.
Now that I understand them, I am a huge fan.
They are basically Mikuni bike carburetors which I have also worked on.
On the fuel starvation theory, it happens at 3500 in 1st gear.
Thats like 20 mph, which I believe is to slow for the ram air to have an effect.
My theory is that I spent too much effort in guiding the flow into the forward carburetor to keep it from being starved by the direct shot to the aft carburetor that it may be pulling air that the seconds carb needs.
I may build another one with a straight 90° fitting instead of the gently flowing piece in the pictures.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Fuel starvation problem solved.
Combination of my ram air 1.0 being too restrictive and improper throttle cable adjustment.
Was pulling my hair out getting there!
I even put a boat fuel tank in the trunk to totally isolate the OEM fuel system.
With open velocity stacks it now pulls cleanly through 5500 in all gears.
The thing is far from fast but now fast enough to be fun!
And now I have a pretty good baseline to work off of on what to expect with the future mod’d motor.
Spent some time out in the shop yesterday Fabing up ram air 2.0.
The largest diameter PVC I can get to fit.
50% improved over 1.0 version but still runs out of flow from mid range up.
So back to open velocity stacks with bike filters on them today.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
