    V6 merc plastic oil pump gear failure at idle

    Hi all,

    Got a 98 V6 2.0L merc. The plastic oil pump drive gear has failed as the boat just came off the trailer at the boat ramp. Only idled for less than a couple mins whilst diagnosing. Quick compression test and still have 110psi on all 6 so very lucky the motion sensor alarm was working! I will install the delete kit and premix however I would like opninons on the following.

    Now Question is do I leave the stripped gear in the crankcase and let the sheared off plastic bits and shwarf In the crankcase get eaten and burn off? And Try and pick off or pick out what strands I can with needle nose pliers but what does everyone think? Normally I fit the delete kit before this happens so I don't have to worry about plastic floating around however we got lucky and diagnosed it before it had a meltdown so I think we can get away without tearing the thing apart.

    Most of the time the failed teeth on the plastic gear are just rolled over without shedding a lot of debri,I suppose tiny bits could plug the bleed line valve,but I would bet most if not all would go through the cylinder.I don't think any damage would result,and if in the future #2 cylinder tends to load up with oil at slow speed you can pull and replace the check valve...easy...install the block-off and premix,Chris
