Hard starting 2.4 with wh3-1A carbs
Hi all,
I own what I believe is a 2.4 could be a 2.0L for all I know how ever I have done everything under the sun to this thing to make it start easier. It's always such a cranky thing to start and often can drain the battery but goes amazing once it's running pulls 6000 rpm all day.
Has wh3-1a carbs and the choke butterfly plate and the choke solinoid on it always seems to drain so much current and will cause the battery to flatten quick. It's got brand new 2bns battery cable so it'd got heaps of grunt and no voltage drop but I'm at the point where I need to make it easier.
I'm keen on converting it to an enrichener valve which ive pinched off another engine I own, is it as simple as drilling and tapping some tail fittings into the top of the middle and bottom carb on the mounting flange? Or can I tee it into the bleeder lines?
What has everyone done/ recommend? It's running a holley electric fuel pump aswell to make things easier

Ok. Let's start with some stuff.
What is your fuel pressure AT the carbs?
What is your timing set at?
Have you done a complete link and sync?
The choke solenoid only draws extremely little voltage and only is on for 2-3 seconds.
Don't drill or try to convert a choke carb to a enricher carb.

Let's get some more info Mate. Is this engine hard to start always, hot or cold? Does it blow a cloud of smoke when it does start? Does it have good spark? And all above questions also?
Looks to be a 2.0 liter with vertical reeds. Sometimes the bore size is cast into the heads.

Has even compression on all 6, will have a lean cough once it starts. Has nice bright spark. These carbs don't have an idle mixture screw either so it's not adjustable. Hot starts easy its only from a Cold start its always been a pig. Will start straight away if I spray down the carbs so is why I want to convert to enrichener valve. Fuel pressure is regulated to about 9psi which I know is quite high because it's a holley blue, has 2 regulators to bring the pressure down, but runs 6000 rpm 63mph everyday. Have done a link and sync too

Ok. Sooo again. What is your fuel pressure at the carbs?
And what is your exact timing set at?

Where is your pump located? Is it picking up fuel after it drains off? Maybe your getting 9 psi of air pressure instead of fuel pressure.
I wonder if you have to much regulator on it? Maybe your not getting enough volume of fuel.
I watch people at the ramp crank and crank without pumping up their primer bulb. If a two stroke has fuel and spark with a bit of timing it should pop right off.
Might try a lower pressure pump or factory pulse and get rid of one or both of them regulators. Or clean carbs or just swap them out. I'm sure it probably started good 40 years ago when it was new. I'm out of ideas. Maybe somebody smarter will chime in. Good luck Mate.
