    2000 Mercury 225hp 2 stroke EFI Offshore

Recently took the engine to have it 'rebuilt' (cheaper than a new one).... was told the compression was good, no need to do complete rebuild.... replaced injectors, ECU and ECM.....I look the engine when I got home and one of module is for a 250? Are they compatible? I was also told that my alternator was a bit noisey and told I might think about replacing it soon.......the next day I took it out for a family outing on the lake....when I started her, she smoked much worse than it had in the past, a call to the mechanic who told me he had put a can of 'RingFree' in it to clear out all the old carbon and it would smoke til it cleared out he engine??? We continued our cruise and all was ok until I bumped it up to 4400 rpm....she studdered a couple of times and die.....attempting to restart it and only got a slight turn over period...no clicking like a dead battery....nothing! The voltage meter read 12.5 with the switch in the on positon but would zero out if I tried to start her.......HELP

Will it turn over at all?

if it does time for a compression test.

if it doesn’t then, well, better call your mechanic

Welcome to the site. Hate it when a first post is like this. First time out...that thing goes back to the mechanic. If I was you I would not touch it. Let him see it first.

I would put a hold on 100% the credit card charge if paid by card until resolved. This way the mechanic has some skin in the game as he has $ tied up in parts I assume. Perhaps take the mechanic out for a spin if possible.

I understand, I'm the same way. I have never seen an alternator cause a motor to crap. Unless that is, it ate the belt and ingested it thru the intake (working on one of them right now). I do all my stuff so I am always the one to blame. But as a builder, if a customer's motor pukes I want to be the first one to know. Good luck.
