Sport master prop shaft compatibility
Will a sportmaster prop shaft interchange into a standard 200 case and gearset? I’ve broken another prop shaft at the taper. The rest of the lower holding up well and looks like can still get a new fatshaft for the sport master, but dont know if need to change all internals.

Yes. Have to use the hi per carrier, reverse spacer, and also cut out the reverse gear so shaft will fit through.

Thanks, that’s the info I was looking for. It has a gieger billet carrier, anyone know if they will accept the shaft with bearing change? I’m thinking the Gieger has enough meat in it to be machined for the SM prop shaft bearing and seals?

I’m looking for a good 20 inch preload SM driveshaft if anyone has one. Gonna upgrade it too while In there. Getting some spline wear. I know not the right section, but didn’t want to open another thread

Preload ? hmmm preload is the terminalogy for the early style gear cases with the preload pin in the of the shaft must be referring to something else ?? and the no part number spacer will have to be used on the sporty/early torqmaster drive (spacer was on the early drive shafts used in the torqmasters it too is not machined for dual bearings shafts ) shaft the consumer case is not machined for the dual d/ shaft bearings either having the reverse gear ground out to 1.45 I.S.diameter is a very common pratice ive done for a long time on the later model gear sets that have the reverse gear thrust ring in the rev gear if you ran a small bearing prop shaft then the carrier will have that bearing in it im not familar with this carrier it may recieve a big 1/14 bearing instead of the small 13/16 plenty of big bearing carriers around though i have several good luck with the swap it works well for the more powerful outboards

I’m wanting to put a sportmaster driveshaft in it also while apart and use a spacer in place of lower bearing, if I can find one. I went ahead and got another billet big bearing carrier for it.

i have one also have a tourqmaster CLE d/shaft that needs speedy sleeves , installed a lot of those over the years because most of the nickel plateing wears off and sealing areas become corroded its a art in itself! sealing surface must be repaired with a jb weld or some other resufacer then sleeve goes over that so it does not leak underneath the speedy sleeve and it will believe me send me your addy in a pm ill mail this to you

Got the shaft in today, thanks for your help Bobby!! Got everything in to get both shafts updated, except stupid seal kit. Dang things on backorder from pro marine. Gonna go through my stash and see if I can put together enough new seals/gaskets to make up a set. I’ll post up some pics after I sleeve the shaft for y’all’s approval.

Welp, found another modification that had to be made if putting a sportmaster big bearing shaft in a fishing unit with non ratcheting gear set/ clutch dog. The small bearing shaft diameter gets small on the reverse gear side of the splines where the big bearing shaft splines end at original diameter causing the clutch to not travel all the way to reverse gear. I cut and tapered the splines in clutch to match big bearing shaft. I’ll get a picture of clutch and post it when get back to shop, forgot it

Welp, after a little more investigation and thought, found I was smokin crack. Yes when disassembled the clutch doesn’t move all the way to flange on shaft at reverse gear, but the fact the big bearing shaft sits deeper in reverse gear due to thinner washer and the limited movement of clutch with pin and linkages hooked to it, it travels enough to fully seat in reverse gear. So no modification needed on clutch dog. I did clearance it a little before I realized i needed to get off the crack, but don’t think it was necessary. Here’s a pic of my new shaft/ carrier set up.

You give me hope: having built some 1 1/2 dozen large Mercury gearboxes for customers over the last four years, I am now experiencing a similar problem with my own 2.5 ltr Sportmaster with a Todd de Fillips aftermarket bearing carrier. Up front, everything is perfect: pinion depth, backlash etc. with the thin washer, I get 1,5 mm axial (lengthwise) play in the propshaft - no positive idle setting or reverse. Did you note down the manufacturer`s reverse gear bearing number? That might be my problem.
