Tesla vs the legacy OEMs
Someone on another forum posted a link to Munro Live video about EVs and I have been down the rabbit hole about EVs for a couple of days. Not continuously of course, I am not that obsessive. Besides Munro I looked at OEM websites, Car and Driver, and the EPA website. It's all enough to make me a Tesla fanboy, although not sufficient to make me want to buy Tesla stock.

From Munro’s benchmarking it’s clear that Tesla is still ahead of the legacy OEMs. Tesla's electrics are simpler and better integrated. The Mach E cooling system seems like a Rube Goldberg contraption beside he Model Y's.
Or consider fuses. The Tesla Y does not have any. The VW ID4 has 77, and the Mach E has 88. My old Plus 2 has 2 fuses. I don't know how many fuses my NC or my wife's Matrix have and I haven't replaced a car fuse in decades. Still zero fuses is impressive to this retired mechanical engineer.
Tesla gets better MPGe then most, which means Tesla’s make more efficient use of their available battery capacity
Lucid can match Tesla MPGe. Lucid is lead by a former Tesla guy.
Range is a Tesla strength. There are apparently 3 ways to boost range. A bigger battery. A more efficient car. And taking advantage of the EPA test rules. Tesla does all 3 well. Tesla also allows owners to use all the battery capacity whereas most OEMs keep a bit in reserve.
Maybe I should buy a Tesla or wait for the others to catch up.
As it turns out, I was dragged to the Munro benchmarking site by one of my customers pre covid pre retirement. It was a very cool place to look at how various OEMs do things.

Well a natural gas powered tesla will be cleaner than a coal powered tesla.
I'm not against electric. I have a fleet of fast electric radio controlled boats. The fastest has a run time of about 3 minutes. They are run by primarily hydropower. Can't catch a dam steelhead or salmon to save my life anymore though. Dang it, everything's a tradeoff.Last edited by OnPad; 12-31-2021 at 12:29 AM.

Oh, I forgot to mention. I've got a pile of lipo batterys for said rc collection. Probably about 1500 dollars worth.
Pretty much junk. They only last about 3 years.
Luckily I haven't had a fire yet. Although I have seen a buddy burn some stuff down. Pretty impressive!!!
