Yes I'll definitely inspect reeds when doing the carbs. Waiting for the carb kits to arrive. Yes the rings had tension and rebound. I could see the top ring sliding smoving sideways back and forth as piston went up and down. As I understand it this sideways play increases as rings wear but I'm assuming some is normal. My factory manual says to check the side clearance of rings with a feeler gauge and refers to the specifications page for measurements but the specs only mention acceptable width range of upper and lower rings, not clearance of ring groove. I have feeler gauges but no way of accurately measuring the width that accurately. It says 0.0895 - 0.0900in for upper ring. If I get the rest of the engine sorted without any nasty surprises and get some use out of it I'm happy to factor in a rebuild down the track. Time is a problem with 3 young kids.

With halfway through a set of gaskets, it's a bugger to put it together again without the whole deal.
Hopefully your head gaskets don't fail next hahaha.
Better use 39:1 and hope it's not too slippery and it chucks a ring. I hear you 3 kids, give them paddles.
    Just pulling your leg.
