1985 Mercury 175 2.4L - Chrome or Steel Cylinders
I am having trouble identifying the cylinder material (Chrome or Steel) for a 1985 Mercury Black Max 175 2.4L engine. I contacted Mercury but they could not help based on the serial number which is A136908. I recently purchased the boat/motor. The engine did get hot but did not seize. Compression was low but I replaced head gaskets and had the heads resurfaced and it brought all cylinders up to a reasonable compression level (126 high, lowest about 110). Motor starts and runs OK in a tank. A little piston slap and I have yet to launch for a lake test.
Can anyone assist with identification of the cylinder material from the pictures included? It would be nice to know my options going forward.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

should be chrome. Stick a magnet on them all and you will know.

...on a chrome motor thats been overheated, check for cylinders being out of round. top to bottom.

Thank you FUJIMO. I am hoping I can use this motor and the 1986 Commander boat for a while without opening up the crankcase. Taking a risk I know. I will know more after the first lake test. Seems to start and run good in a tank. I realize that is a no-load condition. It shifts fine into forward and reverse. Lake test has been delayed due to trailer registration delays. I am in NV but waiting on CA DMV (arg!). Cant wait to get it on Lake Mead for an initial run.
Obtained the boat/motor/trailer at a cheap price from the original owner. The overheating was at idle, operator heard clicking which turned out to be a stripped key on the water pump impeller. Saw smoke from under the cowling which turned out to be scorched foam on the inside of the clamshell cowling halves. Also the idle stabilizer and oil injection alarm modules were slightly melted. He immediately shut it down and was towed in. Since I bought it I have done the following:
· Milled heads, reinstalled with new gaskets
· Replaced Starter
· thermostats and spark plugs
· restored Water Pressure gauge hookup
· Poppet valve Rebuild
· Added Temperature Sender and buzzer for overtemp alarm
· Added Temperature and gauge for operating temp
· Removed Oil Injection
· Removed Idle Stabilizer module and re-timed
· Rebuilt carburetors
· Rebuilt fuel pump
· Changed gear oil
· Replaced leaking exhaust gasket (minor leak from the cooling jacket, looked like it had been leaking for a while)
· Previous owner replaced the water pump.
