I ADDED boom length to the h. f. hoist, and worked great. using chain hoist really sucks.

I use this SnapTrac gantry crane with electric hoist. I am able to easily remove and install outboard motors. Glides like on butter.

I have used a harbor freight engine hoist for years. I jam a 2x4 in between the arm and base to take weight off the hydraulics and can keep it that way for months. Just be careful pushing it around, especially sideways, when you have the engine up and swinging, it can end badly.

Ding - Ding , winner - winner chicken dinner !

I've been needing to put a trolly over my honing machine. Lifting and reaching in about 24" to set a block down nicely .. is getting to be more than my back wants to deal with anymore .. !

    I'll check "SnapTrac" out ..

    343 , that was perfect ...

    Chaz,
Built a monorail system for a friends automotive machine shop. Had parts washer, hot tank, rinse station, boring machine and honing machine all in a line. Single monorail with trolley and electric hoist handled them all. Lightweight I beam mounted to roof joists of building.

Built another one for his surfacing machine when he was getting a lot of heavy diesel cylinder heads in. Did a short monorail that covered from surfacing machines deck to in front of the machine. I beam and trolley with a hoist.

Just a thought for a less expensive way to do it.

Not sure I want to rely on the joist unless $%*! happens.
It depends on how high the lift ring works out to be using a cherry picker. If you put an extension on the boom for more height your rig will tip over even with the legs fully extended. You can compensate for the "tip" by strapping concrete cinder blocks and sand bags on the boom tower end of the picker. You could use the floor joist but I would pound in a pair if 4X4 posts to beef up the span load of the joist. The narrower the span, the better.

No doubt that would make life a lot easier. I thought I was doing good to have air and electric at every station ..
As it is now, I roll heavy stuff around on carts. Loading and un-loading the honing machine is the back breaker .. side walls close together and the centerline just far enough back make for awkward angles, even for two people. I've been threatening myself to do something about it for a while ..

barn door box rail and rollers from Tractor supply. "Rated" at 450# so probably not suitable for complete motors but would probably work fine for blocks and powerheads.

I've always used cherry picker without concern. Usually just a power head , but have had the whole thing except lower hanging from one also. Hell we swapped a ton sbc with em to , got sketchy as chit when we did the BBC tho
