Can Someone School Me On Interior Gel / Paint?
I'm looking for some advice on painting a bilge & interior area. I've done some automotive painting, painted outboards, etc. But haven't really done any gelcoat or anything.
Product recommendations? Process?
Thanks

Bilge area I normally use bilge paint you brush on. You can spray bilge paint but easier to brush on without the overspray to deal with. Auto paint works great on boats on the outside and the cockpit area. I always use high end base coat, clear coat paint with hardner.

...what brad said. use catalized paint, its much harder & can take a cleaning better too. use a fan & a respirator, not a dust mask. also what we did on all the larger offshore bilges is, if we knew that it was going to be a lighter color final paint color, we would gelcoat the bilge white & then sand that smoother, in preparation for the light colored final paint. if we knew the final paint was going to be a darker color, we would apply & sand down a darker gel, like maybe a medium to dark grey prior. believe it or not, utilizing a dark undercoat or primer coat, for a final darker color, changes the final coats color trueness immensely. same goes for the lighter stuff. but you don't have to do this step if you dont want to. it just might be a bit bumpier & may or may not have to apply a second coat of final paint color...

So regular auto paint & harder for the whole job, bilge and under dash? Prep with 220 or do I have to go down to 320/400?
If that's the case I might just farm this one out to the local paint shop. I was hoping I could get away with some roller/brush action on this project.

Check with your paint supply company, they may make a brushing/rolling additive like this one

Followed Randy’s (Wildman) advice using Awlgrip with the brush roller catalyst. Holding up very well. Very tough finish and cleans up nicely.

Thanks guys will look into all options.
I have a fan and respirator. Painted a fair number of outboards before, and my last truck. But I don't have an area I can spray in right now. Used to.

Gelcoat, sand as normal to 80/100 grit, clean area, wipe down with acetone, qt of gel, 10 cc hardner, 6" 3/8 nap mini roller , pour some out and go at it, second coat same setup, just add 1.5cc of wax {surfacing agent}before adding hardner, mix well, add hardner, mix, pour and go, you can put as many coats as wanted ,wait between coats 2hrs or a couple days if needed, add wax only in last coat, not as pretty as AwlGrip, they do make an enamel bilge paint, but I would use something with a cat/hardner, what you use really depends on finish desired, rolling will help hide/fill pinholes scratches, etc. John
