    Cool Merc lower question??

2.5 lower on my 175hp Merc making a grinding noise when putting in forward only reverse is normal. Coming back to netural always normal both with F and R. It's the normal quick grind noise but longer no Madder how you do it fast or slow. Once in forward it's all normal at all rpms. Just started yesterday.

Have you changed or pulled the lower recently? If so shift shaft could be out of sync, but it could be a chipped gear, possibly getting ready to sling a bearing it sounds like

Indeed, I made one out of a plate with 2 bolts and washers, tighten them evenly and it will pull out right out

Worst case scenario you have to drill out the carrier nut, chisel it apart, and then rig up some spacers under a prop to use as a press to get get the bearing carrier out, dont forget to remove the shift shaft first because you are using the prop shaft clutch dog to pull on the reverse gear

    Ha!
Don't do that, most people on here have no idea what that is. They are lucky.

Speaking of carriers, this is my first sporty, so you still need to pin the carrier? I pin the carriers on my L2 m2 omc conned lowers previously. Just curious on opinions
