Iv read that you want your prop 3.5 inchs below pad. Center of prop to pad. Does that sound right? Our whale tail if you want to call it that is just in the water when plained out and trimed. Is that high enough?

Oh boy...engine height...break out the popcorn!
You want your whale tail above the water when running. It does NOT need to be in the water for drag and also stress on the mid.
Lets get get the motor reliable and then play with height. Check a post in the bass boat forum similar to your questions when you have a sec.
Final height is is about setback and hull type. I have 12” of setback and 1” above pad and need another 1/2” up. Do you have a jack plate? Do you have a water pressure gauge yet?
you will find a bunch of good guys with tons of knowledge who freely share it on a daily basis here.1990 Shadow bass boat w/ 2.4 200 Merc. Totally resto'd boat and love it!

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by not a 40

You have a 9 or 16 amp stator, not a 40 amp stator.

Hard for me to see the color. Old and half blind. I have never seen a 40 amp system on a clamshell motor. Doubt it would fit. Also looks to be a voltage regulator on top of motor.

I measured my prop to pad today and its 5.5 inches!!!! That's center of prop to pad. This is on the 1988 Bass Tracker 1800FS with my 1988 Mercury 150 black max with a Quick silver laser 2 21 pitch. Feel like if i went up 2 holes i should be able to up a pitch or two. Does that sound right. I had a friend looking at the motor running cold issue i am having, he told me that its getting to much fuel and that could cause it to run cold and i should check the floats. He told me the original floats can absorb the gas over time and get heavy. Where would be a good place to get parts for these older motors? Again thanks for all the previous information.

5 1/2 inches below pad is absolutely buried. Definitely need to come up some. have to keep an eye on your water pressure as you do. In my experience, laser II props suck monkey balls. I have tried them on several boats and they have never run worth a damn. They do not have enough diameter and not enough cup on the blades. Try to borrow a buddys Prop that has more of both. You will know when you are getting close. Pitch is the last thing to work on for your RPMs. I picked up about 7 mph over laser prop just by experimenting with other props.

And yes, you can probably end up running on 23 once you raise your motor. Absolutely positively have to watch your water pressure as you do.

When you have a minute, post a better picture from the rear of your motor where the voltage regulator is so that we can see what you have.
