Evinrude Electric Shift
I have two 1972 65 horse Evinrudes. A 65272S and a 65273S.
One is a short shaft and the other is standard.
I have some questions.
Do the model numbers indicate the shaft length (transom height)?
In the picture the 2 lower units are different. The water intake on one has slots and the other has round holes.
They also have different water pumps. Are these lower units correct for my 2 engines or is one from a previous model year?
Is there a trick to threading the wires through the hole at the bottom of the powerhead? The wires go through, but the part with the spiral grommet (my terminology) doesn't want to go very deep.

If i remember right one is a 1972 year the other is a 1973 i think 1973 was when they went to the round holes on water pick up on the side of gear case you push a thin wire down thru the upper part of the motor where the 2 wire hook up you then bend the thin wire over on its end then tape it to the 2 wire cable use grease or a lot of soap around cable pull the cable up tru the upper part of motor then you can hook up to the shift wires hope you understand jim 45157

1972 was the last year of the electric shift. The green lower is definitely 1972, the other one may be a replacement housing upgraded with the round holes since it has the swept back skeg. So long as the driveshaft splines are the same it should work.

Model numbers both are 1972. No length listed by model number. 1973 was last year for electric shift on a 65 model number was 65372 or 65373
