21 Challenger test from 1977 Powerboat
This is where it all began for the SOB crowd. 64 mph with a 200 crossflow.
The other fast boats tested in that issue were were an 18' jet boat with a 550 HP twin turbo 454 at 75 mph and a Sleekcraft with a 188 Mercruiser at 57 mph. We live in a faster world now.

I remember when that was fast. Things have changed!
Glad I was around to see the progress of the boats and engines. That's still a fast hull with today's big motors.

When I was a kid, my father worked out of a shop across from Challenger Boats and would take me to the shop to see them outside on trailers.

I have that issue too and is a fav!
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Thx for posting. I was graduating high school when I saw that magazine and swore I’m was going to buy a challenger. 11 years later I bought a Image Marine Shadow 21. To date one of the funest boats I’ve ever owned. Heated 2.4 Bridgeport tweaked it to 80 mph.

Yes, the first Tuff 21 was Challenger based. There was a Challenger mold in Ontario and there were some locally made boats. RBT probably knows the details.
