Prop help needed for baker tunnel with xr4
Hey guys, I need help figuring out what prop to run for my setup. I have an 18’ Baker Tunnel with an ‘89 Merc XR4. It’s sitting on a hydraulic Jack plate and the original setback risers, probably about 10” of setback currently. I have a 4 blade prop on it that has some pretty serious cupping and grinding done to it. It came with the motor and I have no idea what pitch it is, but here are some things to help:
I have had 7 grown adults and lots of gear in my boat and this prop got them all up on plane.
I can take this same prop by myself and run 60 mph at 6200 rpms, nose cone jacked up to about level with the pad, 17 psi of water pressure. I didn’t intend on turning it so fast, I had just never raised it up that high before so my eyes were glued to the water pressure and I wasn’t watching the tach.
So with these facts, what do y’all think?Last edited by Pilotryan; 11-15-2021 at 09:42 AM.

If the pitch is not on the side of the prop it's probably on the front by thrust washer. Need that info for a place to start.

I have a 24P Laser II that I can try out. I also have a prop that has no markings anywhere other than where someone engraved “Hooter”. It looks very similar to the Laser II.

Do you have the original 4.25” 1.78 gearcase? That will limit prop selection. It’s a weak gearcase, I blew up 3 or 4 of them with my XR4

I’m not sure which one I have. I’d have to spin it and see if it’s the 2:1 or the 1.78

I've had a few Bakers hopefully I can help.
What year is your hull.
Is it a open bow.
With your current setup and prop will it carry your bow running by yourself.
Can you post a closer picture of your setback setup

Jerry Baker designed the 18.6 I believe in 84. The 84 and 85 had the center sponson that ran all the way to the rear matching the outside sponsons.
86 and to about 89 the center sponson was cut back about 3" for quicker and better lift. There great little boats that can carry a load and get across some rough water.
The hull has a built in setback of about 7" designed into the mold. Because you have a open bow with the extra weight you probably need the extra setback to carry the bow.
If your looking for a play prop to go try to out run some boats a 24 big ear Chopper or a 24 Trophy worked for me because there bow lifting props.
Ski props you'll have to play with. 18P?
If your boat tends to propoise when your running with a buddy have them sit in the back opposite from you.
Your XR4 is a strong motor and you can see mid to low 70's and you can run it up to 6800 no problem with some testing.Last edited by Baker343; 11-15-2021 at 11:57 PM.

I’m going to try this 24 Laser II and see how that does. What is the difference between a Trophy and a Laser?

Don't know the difference between the two. I would guess the Trophy gives greater overall lift. I run a lazer on my Lavey Seabring ski boat and it works for me. Try and borrow all the props you can. Find a couple that work and have them tweak a little if you want more performance

Update:
Here are the results from all 3 propellers:
20P HI-TECH 4 Blade that has been worked in its past - 59 mph at 6250rpm
24P Laser II - 59 mph at 6000 rpms
Mystery Propeller I bought the boat with (unknown pitch and size) - 62 mph at 5100 rpms
Holeshot is acceptable with all 3, but best with the 4 blade.
I don’t think we have a winner here! It sounds like I’m capable of a prop around 5600 rpm and 65 ish mph
