    OMC VRO pump

I know all to well that the early VRO pumps failed "lean" with no warning until the death rattle was heard and you were dead in the water . I seem to remember that the later year pumps late 90"s into the 2000"s
failed "rich" with smoke cloud and fouled plugs/a good thing, am I correct or do the later pumps fail lean as well. Thinking of replacing the pump in my 2002 115 while they are still available would rather not mix if I don't have to been running it for 10 summers with no issues.
    Thanks

I always eliminated the vro on my omc,s, for the reason you said of failing, it only takes a few seconds of no oil at 7k to do some real damage, I would rather know it is getting the oil myself, just my opinion

The early ones we had put to much oil in the later ones have a o ring that goes bad and lets oil into the carbs when not running after a few days later you have trouble starting the motor or it would not start at all carbs would be full of oil they also make a repair kit but its better to replace the vro unit they all have trouble the oil line on the mercs go bad cause no oil to pump and the gear on crank goes bad sometimes dont go 40 to 1 unles you are turning over 6000 rpm will cause rings to stick then you got trouble jim45157

Worst case you would foul out a champion plug, I never had any real issues other than that, better then losing a ring, and shoving a piston with broken rod through block

    I am a VRO fan.

In my life, had one failure and it over oiled and was covered under warranty.

I lived in Fla for 9 yrs and bought every blown up V-6 looper I could find and ZERO were caused by failed VRO’s.

Yrs back, I bought an STV w/a ‘1994 225 looper on it.
That motor turned 7200 every time out.
    With…….., a functioning VRO.
    Zero issues.

I owned two different 24’ Sonics, both w/twin V-6 loopers, one pair I bought new, one pair I built from spare parts while inFla.
Put 100’s of hrs on both sets.
Other than replacing one wk one on the pair I built, zero issues.

On my current twin OB 25’ Checkmate project, powered by V-6 loopers, both run VRO’s.

If you are thrashing on them, the factory manual says to mix 50:1 in the tank for safety.

I like making it easy to use, low drama, low smoke, and to continue to wave the two stroke flag.

I even install remote fills for the oil tanks so I don’t have to crawl in the back of the boat, move cushions, vest etc, try not to spill it etc.

They made a 2 gl tank which I run, and can run 5 - 6 tanks of fuel before adding oil.
So no extra oil jugs in the bilge.

W/the latest era carbs, w/the allen screw idle adjuster screws, tuned properly, you can get the motors to idle smoke free once warm.

I also build/install electric fuel primers so I don’t need to squeeze a primer bulb.

As close to 4 stroke/EFI ease of use as possible and on a $1500 motor that’s 50 - 100 lbs lighter, per.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I guess I owe wanting to remove them to my dad, he was always scared of them cause he blew up a 225 vind. Powered because one failed him at 6500 and blew up before he knew what happened, so he always mixed 1 to 5 and we never had any issues after that

In the omc manuals it actually states to premix 1:50 in the tank on top of the VRO for performance boating

So the extra oil never hurts , he never had the manual, hence why I try to get one whenever I get a new motor

I have to admit I never had any problems with vro either/ran it for 5yrs. On my 1989xp 200 but when it comes to mod it’s-to me-nice knowing there’s light fuel pressure waiting on hand to be used and pre-mixed.

If the VRO takes out the motor, everything is scored and blue.
    Crank, Rod journals sleeves.
    Which Ive never seen.

If the motor took the top off a piston off, that’s not lack of oil.

    Yes to the extra oiling.
That was in my 9 page diatribe above
